I could use some tips to stop the local cat population using part of my garden as their toilet!at the moment i'm putting black pepper down ,but the rain washes it away.I dont want to hurt the little b'''s but it really smells bad when the sun gets on it and we have to shut the windows. Any advice /hints etc.---ps.we dont want to get a dog!

Most of the chemical treatments dont work for long if at all.
Ultrasonic devices work but can cost.
Likewise infra red devices attached to sprinklers work but cost.

Some people use broken up sharp twigs or a bottle of water in those areas. The water thing always confuses me but its supposed to create a reflection which cats dont like.

I favour largeish decorative stone pebbles, have to be a big cat to shift them :D

Cats dont like oranges/orange peel - you could do something imaginative with that.

My cat does! She comes and licks my fingers after I've peeled an orange! :)

Anyway, if you can identify the particualr spots that are in use you can cut drinking straws into thirds or quarters and stick them into the ground about two inches 5cm apart and leave about 5-7cm above ground.

That way the little darlings can't squat without getting poked in the nether regions which they don't like.

If you get nice straws it can be quite colourful :)

I fully sympathise with you - our garden gets full of cats they $#!£ and pee every where. - I believe cat owners should be made responsible just like dog owners! - keep them in their own gardens.

Why should I have to put silly little sticks, pepper, peel, or whatever all over my garden?

Regretably its hard to get hold of a good gun these days what with our fluffy society laws - so what i suggest is an electronic cat scarer from Argos -721/7786 (dont buy the cover, insurance etc) - the reason for this is I dont know if they work, at least at Argos they will take it back if it doesn't!

    Alternatively
A big rat trap - catch the cats and transport them 50 mile away and lose them.

    or

Buy a real cat, a tiger or a lion - let that wander around - you'll soon get those cat owners keeping a closer eye on Tiddles.

Dont get get me wrong, I don't dislike cats, I think they're very intelligent creatures, its their owners I dislike, they buy the cats thinking they're an easy pet - install a cat flap and forget about the cat - day and night.

Oh yes - 12million+ cats in the UK - if each cat kills 2/3 birds/baby rabbits/small creature each month then that means 360,000,000 small creatures each year

and there's a declining bird population, I wonder why?

my garden is like the local cat creche - but i love to see them come and go, but, luckily they dont do their business in my garden as i planted curry plants as a border edge and where these are they wont go - they just lie down in the middle of my lawns and sunbathe - touch wood - it is very very rare i find cat poo in my garden at all, so, they must really hate curry plants, so, get some of that......

also, i have a big black tom cat (neutred) and he is an indoors cat - he is too vicious to let outdoors as he attacks anything that moves - hence, i have always had him as an indoors cat and really wouldnt like him wandering anyway - i would worry too much and wouldnt like the thought of him pooing in others gardens - like you say, it isnt fair....

Actually Cameron, the fact that cats are independant animals, i.e easy pets, is precisely why many people have them.

I have mentioned before on here, that many elderly people simply aren't fit enough to keep a dog, so they have a cat as a companion instead.

Cats are domesticated wild animals, the law distinguishes them from dogs, as theyre natural instincts have not been bred out of them, and cannot(generally) be trained to stay within the confines of their own garden. They are territorial creatures, and unfortunately their territory includes your garden.

Apart from hanging out old cd's, the reflection and movement may scare them off, or squirting with a water pistol when you see one, I don't know there's much you can do about.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.
  • I have one of the argos sound repellers. It cost around £30 but it works. I was having to go and clear the garden everyday before my children could go and play. It is also nice as we have more birds in the garden now.

    :hello:

I had this problem many years ago. I put rose clippings down where they jumped into the garden from the fence. Thorny plants can keep animals out as well as burglars if sited correctly.
