  • Sorry I can't help with grants, but there might be a section in your library that has information. There is in all our local libraries. Otherwise, she might be able to use part of her loan to get a laptop, or use university computers. When I was there a couple of years ago, the computer section was open 7am-10pm, so plenty of opportunity to use them.

Have a search online for educational trusts in your area as they may be able to help with some funds.

She does not need a laptop. She will be able to get 24 hour access to computers at university.
  • Does anyone know about a scheme that gives you £250.00 voucher towards a new computer?

I have an Autistic son who needs a computer for various reasons, he was using our home one that was 6 years old but it has eventually died. We are on a low income and my son gets DLA for his numerous conditions.

We were looking in Apple to see how much it would cost minimum and 2 assistants mentioned this £250.00 voucher that a few disabled and/or low income people have used - apparantly its from the education. I can't find anything to do with it.

I know the government were giving free computers to some people but as we weren't actually on benefits (Income Support or JSA) we couldn't apply.
We are both Self Employed but I get carers as my wages aren't even £3k gross a year and as a childminder my partner isn't on much either - we are on full tax credits.
  • The best grant search facility I am aware of is: www.turn2us.org.uk/grants_search.aspx

For anyone who has served a single day in the forces (or is a spouse/dependant) then www.ssafa.org.uk/how-we-help/ or www.britishlegion.org.uk/can-we-help

For post 16 educational needs www.family-action.org.uk/section.aspx?id=1037

EDF, nPower and British Gas and some of the water companies have grants too see www.charisgrants.com/

There was a scheme a couple of years ago for computers, but it was only open for a few months. You could apply to the Family Fund for help, as they will provide a computer for those who qualify.
