So how did you tactfully tell your partner that an item of clothing that belonged to his recently deceased Dad was truly awful? (which was the advice she was asking for)

But that's different from what the OP says about her husband so he might just really like the jacket.

I didn't say the jacket was truly awful. I can't remember exactly what I said as it was over 5 years ago. I probably just told him the jacket didn't suit him or aged him.
But, if you don't think they're right, why don't you change them? I really think that we must mean something different when we use the word "opinion".

I have opinions on all sorts of things from religion/abortion or other serious matters to trivial things like what food I like. Some are very strong opinions and some, obviously, are not but I realise that other people have different opinions to me. My opinions are right to me but I understand that other people's opinions are right to them.

Getting back to the original topic (can we even remember what that was, lol):

in future just bear in mind before writing bitchy and horrible replies (on this thread or on any other one) that someone is on the receiving end.

There's a lot of cyber-bullying on this board

  • The OP is showing as online and so will presumably read people's replies. I am sorry for your partner's loss, and hope things work out ok for you both, whatever happens to the coat.

and I had no idea what you and Suki were talking about - I use the "old" style forum on my laptop, but when I had a look on my phone I saw Suki's waving hand - I like it :D.

My opinions are right to me but I understand that other people's opinions are right to them.

If we're talking about big moral issues (as opposed to favourite colours) then opposite opinions can't both be right. As examples, either capital punishment is wrong or it isn't and either women are inferior to men or they're not.

There'll obviously be different opinions on both those issues but I just don't believe that both points of view can be right.
  • I agree with the people who have said there is no need to tell him. Let him grieve.

The first few posts said it all really.
