    Agreed until the last paragraph.

I do not see May as professing to lead a united country.
On the contrary, I see this as an acknowledgement of the very deep rifts within the country at the present time and also of the proportion of the population disagreeing, as you allude to.

Thus I see the speech as an acknowledgement as said above and a request for tolerance and acceptance.

    .

Well maybe you need to read it again :)

"This year, after a period of intense debate over the right future for our country, there is a sense that people are coming together and uniting behind the opportunities that lie ahead.
"For at heart, this country is one great union of people and nations with a proud history and a bright future."

At best this is wishful thinking I suggest. Scotland is clearly of a different view to England. London to the NE etc.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

No, I don't need to read it again.
    Interpretation is key.
    ;)
    there is a sense that
Note this does not say "we are" or "I can see" - or any other proclamation of certainty; here it's use is IMHO intended as intuitive.
In other words used as a thought or idea.

Though I accept (as before) that it is open to interpretation.
And it comes as absolutely no surprise that some will interpret in a negative manner and some positive.
Although it IS Easter I will not remind readers of this thread the reason this is celebrated and the significance thereof in relation to this speech by May. ;)

I think you'd 'lost it' when you started the thread. :D
  • Today the FT suggests that a two tier Europe post-Brexit is best avoided:
Member states should stop promoting the idea of a “two-speed” Europe, which is reflected in the divisions between the eurozone, the Schengen area and the EU. Pursuing this idea further will antagonise Poland, as well as Denmark, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Hungary. Responding to Brexit by giving the eurozone more state-like structures is to separate the north and east and draw a dividing line through Mitteleuropa, while making the northern eurozone states paymasters of a new Latin currency union.

  • From The Commentator, some hints for the EU as to why they need UK cooperation on defence:
The hypocrisy of denouncing Britain for daring to raise the prospect of no Brexit deal, while taking every ludicrous ultimatum from the EU as entirely natural and justified, needs to be challenged. Defence is an example where we are perfectly ready to play fair, but not at any price

  • The riskiness surrounding French elections is making the Euro more volatile than it has been since before the UK referendum:
“The risk is that the far left and the far right make it into the second-round run-off,” said Kathleen Brooks, strategist at City Index. “Although this outcome still has a slim probability, the market is showing signs of nervousness about a shock result from the French election.”

Basically, the EU cannot say that the UK must fulfil EU obligations during the Brexit process if it does not apply the same obligations itself.
    Remember?.

What obligation will the EU be failing on by moving headquarters for EU agencies from one EU city that's about to leave, to another EU city that isn't?

Though I do wonder what we'll find to replace all these jobs we're handing over to the mainland.

So much angst and costly negotiations for what?

Bet there will be a deal + free movement included as a deal breaker. Norway, Switzerland and Iceland will not be happy otherwise!

I get the feeling that it will be Brexit for UK, look what we did, we exited the EU aren't we wonderful!

But in every other way it will be business as usual, without the EU passports and reg plates. It is that simple really.
