M&S Switch voucher now £220

  • Just initiated the switch process and am waiting for my £100 voucher -wont be pushing for the £10/month extra as I actually switched a longstanding current account that had evolved into a 'holding' account for holiday savings so no D/D's required . One question that I'm curious about, while probably not an ethical thing to do, how soon could I switch again to another bank paying, say £100 to switch?

I don't think any bank has special "husband and wife" application processes. Even if you apply for a joint account, each person gets assessed independently, and the bank therefore needs the data for each person.

You are also not meant to apply on behalf of another person unless you have PAO.
I understand that youaren't meant to apply on behalf of another person and as she was sat with me I don't think the fact that I was actually typing in the details really counts does it? Fair enough on the assessing independently bit I guess but to not offer an option for not being paid seems a bit of an oversight.

Interesting to use the word "ethical" when dealing with banks. Not sure it will catch on though.

With most switch incentives you can switch again after receiving the payment but you should read the switch T&C before doing so to check this is indeed the case as it isn't always, e.g. Nationwide RAF offer gives them right to reclaim the £100 if your friend closes the account within 3 months of receiving the payment. Best always to save a copy of the T&C too in case have an issue with receiving your payment etc.
  • Thanks for the tip, I'll dig out the paperwork for a better read. If there is a time limit I'll use the voucher and bide my time to my next switch

Why give up on the additional £120? Just pay in £1,000 a month by SO, set up a couple of DDs for - say - £10 each, pay £980 back by SO to where the £1,000 came from. DDs are easy to find, just check the forum. It takes a little bit of initial setting up but is a superb hourly rate.

If you want to want to go for another witch bonus elsewhere, just open another current account somewhere for that purpose.

Phoned them earlier and they 'think should be fine' to qualify for new switch offer if open an additional account and switch into that but wants to confirm with someone first and will call me back to say for sure. Will report back here for info in case anyone else in similar position to me. Let's just hope it's a simple 'yes fine' so that a prolonged call going through all the various T&C isn't required.

Update - spoke to them earlier and they confirmed that as I have not yet initiated a switch to them into my existing M&S current account opened last Oct, I can qualify for the new offer by opening a second current account with them and switch into this. Also confirmed that as long as I retained the first account I opened with them then I would not need to comply with the new terms to renew the Regular Saver (eg requirement for direct debits).

Have they offered to give that to you in writing? I am still waiting for written confirmation of the same verbal assurance they gave me a couple of days back. None of the material on their website supports what they said.

Umm, err, yeah but the OP didn't type it in pink, did he. :)
I've edited the initial post to clarify :)

No but he did say it was a recorded call hence can ask them to listen to it if any future disagreement. Anyhow not too worried about it as I'll definitely have the 2 DD etc needed for when my RS renews next Oct given I'll still be within the 12 month £10 per month offer period. Did they agree to provide you with written assurance then?
