Holiday alone

Agree, priced a river cruise and it was very expensive,
I am thinking of the Hellenic classic, with Thomson, does anyone have any experience of this? There are single cabins available.0 -

Definitely not a destination I'd recommend for any single female traveller, much less a novice.
Sorry to hear that happened to you - must have been very scary
We were in Taormina which felt very safe.0 -
I'm guess that this thread will go quiet when she realises that it is just a ludicrous waste of time and money for just one week.
You clearly have absolutely no clue what being a working single parent is like. You just don't know what a luxury it is for a single mum to be in a position when they can finally stop thinking/planning/organising/clock watching/rushing/triple tasking... and the last thing you want for a holiday is to do it all over again! Of course, when your normal life is boring, a bit of excitement during the holidays is much more welcome.0 -
Piglet, did you check this out?

It's getting better than before, and single person supplement is not de rigour any more.
Still, I did quite well in January 2015 with a Courchevelle 1850 ski deal. Full price was £900 per person, so £1,800 for the room for two. I ended up paying about £600, including single person supplement. Five days of perfect conditions. Ski-in Ski-out, half board. They even threw in free airport parking in Gatwick, for a week!
Doing Nagano (Japan) next week, plus the Osaka-Kyoto-Kobe triangle. KLM was doing a £400 return deal to Osaka a month ago, but I'm flying with Air China, because you get a free night of hotel in Beijing, for an overnight transfer. You get free 72 Hour FREE transit visa on a British passport. 7 Day Japan Rail Pass (like Inter-Rail) costs £158, for foreigners, who must buy before they fly to Japan.
I did the Trans-Siberian Moscow to Beijing 25 years ago.
Booked through Intourist, which was £350, for one night in Hotel Belgrad in Moscow, and a half day guided tour in Moscow, before getting on the train. Getting off the train was virtually impossible, but things are changing. Chatted to a travel agent in November, who offered a St Petersburg - Vladivostok trip, or the other way. Around 20 days worth, with lots of excursions. It was constantly getting off, stay in hotels, and getting on the next train. And now, ALL CHANGE! The Russians have a NEW set up!
A special train is used for the tour, so you leave your luggage permanently in your cabin, and the train stays in a siding until you leave. Really convenient. Even better, the tour guide occupies a double cabin, so there is ALWAYS room for a Solo Traveller! Around £6,000 per person, which is a once in a life time gig. Check out Joanna Lumley's three episode Siberian travelogue recently.0 -

What's with you and the cold weather?? Perhaps you live in a hot country.
I did watch Joanna Lumley, but I'm not one for travelling to colder climates.
Funny, that I'm actually utilising the hotel mentioned in that article.
Missed out on a recent £200 return deal to Japan. Girlfriend was too slow in deciding. Perhaps later, but we'll go when it's warmer
Had almost purchased the rail pass.
Nothing wrong with going solo. Though of course it's nice to have the option of solo or not.0 -

That's a big leap, since you have no idea of whether I do or not.
Secondly, I didn't ever suggest that the OP take some kind of crazy, busy holiday. She misread what i wrote in the first place and totally overreacted...with the help of a few other hysterical characters.
What I actually wrote and meant is that she should do what she actually wanted to do and not to be limited by fear/safety.
So if a cruise was what she actually wanted to do, then that was fine.
Then a few hysterical people, including herself, took that to mean that she should go backpacking.
When my point was that she should not limit herself because of perhaps unfounded safety aspects, to spending thousands of pounds to reside in a tiny 12 metre square room as a captive audience.
So I just threw a few random ideas out there.
As to the Thailand thing. My girlfriend isn't a big fan(neither am I these days), but she loves the food, weather and the spa treatments.
So she gets to have hours of spa treaments and massages whilst I go training. Sitting in a hammock in the shade, metres from the sea. Fresh seafood plucked from the sea just hours before... it's not a terrible time for a break away from the stresses of life.
As for the ridiculous claims of men of a certain age....it just shows how outdated the ideas of some people here.
Just a few of the places she and I would visit:
http://www.thesparesorts.net/
https://www.tamarindsprings.com
http://www.kamalaya.com/index.htm
It seems most here don't have a clue as to what is available and prefer to defend their position by writing nonsense.
I don't mind, as it doesn't change my life an iota. I'm eating healthy organically produced food every day, am in good shape and the girlfriend is pleasantly relaxed and being pampered every day.
My simple point was to be free....not just a captive audience because of fear. But unpleasant characters chose to twist my words.0 -

It is January, after all.
I would recommend Soma Bay in Egypt, which I went without paying single person supplement about a year ago, but security concerns prevail. The crazy thing is, the same travel agent just sent me an e-mail full of offers on Eilat, ISRAEL!
Actually, I did the Trans-Siberian around July. Around Mongolia, the grass was swaying like sea waves, and you don't see the rail track. The effect is like you are cruising in a sea of green. People told me the winter trip is more romantic, and being trapped with the right person in a two berth cabin (heated in winter) is fabulous. Waiting for the snow plough just means you get more time together. Oh well, not if you are solo, in a six berth.0 -
I live in Manchester. I'm planning a trip to Svalbard. I'm sure that does not compute with youNiftyDigits wrote: »What's with you and the cold weather?? Perhaps you live in a hot country.

This has been a really informative thread, for those who travel alone most of the time, and those people like me who just love a few days away by ourselves every so often.
I've taken a few city breaks in Europe over the past few years, and really enjoy the experience of doing exactly what I want when I want to do it. Very liberating.
I hope you find what you're looking for OP. There are many lone female travellers out there who are doing exactly what you are doing.
As for the unpleasant and stalkerish poster who is continuing to post, despite the fact that nobody is interested in his opinions,- I think his bullying and hectoring is massive attention seeking, and best just ignored.0
