Holiday alone

Hi

Can anyone recommend a holiday for a lone traveller.

I'm thinking of a cruise, or maybe an all inclusive week in the sun.

Has anyone done this before, did you enjoy it, feel safe etc.

I'm a 41 year old female.

Thanks

  • I went to venice by myself for a long weekend a few years ago and enjoyed that. It all depends what sort of thing you'd like really, then finding the best deal to pay for it. I keep meaning to go back to amsterdam, or bulgaria, or go to rome or somewhere but am saving right now to move house so keep putting it off. Groupon have some good deals sometimes, you just have to check the small print carefully about single supplements and transfers, so you don't end up having to pay twice even though it is just you.

Maybe try a long weekend somewhere first if you're nervous about it. Or look at cheap eurostar deals to places, and rooms on expedia, remembering to use quidco as well.

Thanks for your suggestions, I will be looking into options over the next few weeks

Should add, I live in Ireland, so maybe less options?

I saw your post in the other tread. You are blessed. I would say: I've vacated as a singleton last year. They were short - burst city escapes. Perhaps more suitable than a sunny beach holiday with family and couples everywhere. With a city vacation, you're wandering lost in space and lost within your thoughts, letting the atmosphere of a new place wash over you. Hope that help.

    Thank you,

City break is certainly something I will consider, instead of jumping in to a week in the sun for my first solo adventure

I had a week at an all inc resort in Turkey in October (half term week) for what I wanted out of a holiday it was perfect - sea to swim in, warm enough to sit out all day and read but not so hot I was in danger of sun burn, unlimited food and drink.

I wish now I'd made the effort to get out of the resort, go in to the local town or up in to the hills hiking but my plan was to simply rest and relax and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to do just that. If I can save enough money I might try to go again around the same time this year and do more while I'm there.

I'm a young looking 30 year old and felt perfectly safe around the resort - even wandering down the beach towards the town where alot of the locals tied up their small fishing boats.

I've done city breaks in the UK alone and find that for me busy places are not my thing alone. So I'd say work out exactly what you want from the trip, and what you'd feel comfortable doing alone. For me weirdly the hardest part was going to lunch, breakfast I tended to get from the snack bar near the pool, and at dinner the restaurant was busier so I didn't think I stood out as much. Another friend has said that she can't go abroad alone as she can't bare the idea of flying and dealing with foreign airports on her own.
It’s not worth doing something unless someone, somewhere, would much rather you weren’t doing it.

  • Recently spent a week in Barcelona. My 1st solo trip abroad, am female.
Felt very safe even during the evening, when out for dinner.
Spent the days wandering around enjoying the city, pleasing myself.
Would certainly do more solo trips.

I am very open to suggestions, but in terms of what I like based on previous holidays, all inclusive, sun, pool, def not Egypt, have been here before with my daughter and found the men very intense so would not like to go there again alone,

I love reading, and can easily pass the day at the pool reading, listening to music etc

I would like to try a cruise, has any one ever tried this alone?
    Thanks
  • I've been on lots of holidays on my own, have just come back from a couple of weeks in a hotel in Madeira. I felt very safe there - it was fine wandering about in the evenings. I think feeling of safety depends very much on the location - as in this country.

I'm happy to chat to others if there are friendly people around, alternatively I'm very content with just my own company (and Kindle!) too. One option to consider if you would prefer a bit of company might be a guided tour holiday - a small group means that there are people that you can get to know a bit and chat with, and there may well be other people travelling on their own within the group. I've been on a couple of tours and enjoyed them.

With a cruise or all inclusive hol, you may find that you're seated at the same table with the same people for every meal - that could be good or bad, obviously!

I wouldn't fancy sitting with the same people all the time! Need to think this through!

I've become a cruise freak! (after years of travelling with off the beaten track type holidays- think Explore, Toucan etc- when younger)
I love cruising as it ticks all the boxes, travel to somewhere new, only unpack once, meet lots of people, lots to do on sea days- crafts, deck games, bridge, dance classes, talks etc, nice to singles and just sometimes not ripped off to pay OTT single supplement!
I've always travelled with Fred. Olsen lines- trouble is clientele out of your age group- a lot older. Smallish ships- not the 2K sizes!!
Here's one way you might try the experience.
Last year there was a chap from Dublin who came on the cruise for one night! He caught ferry to Liverpool, stayed in hotel overnight and explored the city, got on ship and stayed one night as first port of call was Killybegs enroute to Canada. Same cruise running in May & Sept this year. The travel agent argued that as the cruise line was advertising departures from Ireland then there would be empty cabins for the first night out of Liverpool. Just a thought.
Sitting with the same people? Yes at night, but you could always go to the self service. If not happy you can ask Maitre D' to move you. Breakfast & lunch are open seating.
