Work out what interests you and have an itinery of what you want to do and see based on that. I've had miserable times on my own in holiday resorts with nothing much to do but think dark thoughts but much better times when I have a plan to see a set of places and things that interest me (in my case usually sites of historical significance).

Going on holiday alone is brilliant - you get to do what you want, where you want, when you want (and - if you fancy it - with who you want!). Spend all day shopping, reading, sunbathing - it's nobody's concern but your own.

However, if you've never done it before then it might be worth doing a weekend break rather than a whole week to see how you get on. Somewhere in western Europe before trying somewhere more exotic and adventurous.

I'd avoid "solo holidays" like as it's much more fun to do your own thing instead of being stuck with a bunch of strangers who want to be your new best friend. I'm not sure I'd fancy a cruise but whatever floats your boat...

Has anyone done this before, did you enjoy it, feel safe etc.

If you go on a group tour (eg. a coach tour), you won't be travelling alone. There'll be a couple of dozen (or more) people travelling with you.

Being single, I always travel "alone" (but, as above, with other people on the same tour), and have never felt uncomfortable/unsafe.

Not for me. The problem with being on a tour isn't about feeling along but being stuck in the middle of a crowd that you can't get away from and being stuck to a timetable. The beauty of solo travel is doing your own thing at your own pace so why be part of a group?

There are some parts of the world where it makes sense to do a tour (there's no way I'm going up the Amazon on my own!) but places are perfectly safe as long as you use some common sense are there are usually plenty of other independent travellers around so you are never totally alone.

Air b & b is good for self catering accommodation.
Never tried it myself but my son swears by it.
That way you can have the option to self cater or eat out.

I'm thinking of doing an Intrepid tour sometime. The foodie one around Thailand or Mexico appeals and OH doesn't want to go. He's happy for me to go it alone whilst he decorates at home.

I've been to Amsterdam, Spain & Florida on my own. Does get a bit boring at night sometimes with no one to talk to, but that's the only downside.

I joined 'meet up' to get out more and I am subscribed to "Travel Buddies". They have loads of holidays organised.....I'm a fussy traveller and I don't like the idea of having to eat breakfast at a certain time and having to be at a certain place at a certain time etc. as others have said it doesn't seem like a holiday when you're stuck with a group of people working to a schedule! What if you don't like the people and you're stuck with them for X days? EEEEKKKKK

You and I are the same age and it is a bit daunting going away solo but do try a city break first. Good Luck

I wouldn't fancy sitting with the same people all the time! Need to think this through!

I've done many cruises on my own and would recommend requesting a large table, at least 8, so that you don't get stuck with someone you would prefer to avoid.

The big advantage of having the same table every evening is that you get to meet people and get a conversation going. Cruises also give you evening entertainment if you want it or quizzes where you just join a table of people and throw in your knowledge.

It's a good first time option and gets you used to travelling alone.

I would suggest P&O as a good one to consider.

    Hope this helps.
  • P&O do what they call freedom dining so, although you eat in the same restaurant (if you choose formal over buffet style dining - and we could alternate if we choose) then you can eat when you want rather than be told you wil eat at 6.45 hungry or not.

You also have the choice of sharing a table with different people each night or you can have a table just for your group - though sometimes we've had to wait for a table for 2
