As a single female I'm in a similar situation - I'm starting to think about solo holidays.

I have a quick question for those who have done it, what do you do about suncream on your back?

There would be some times I would want to swim, or relax in the sun and I burn easily.

You put sunscreen on before you go out in the sun you only buy spray type then pot luck i manage on my own i tend to burn on my front legs sounds daft.
I fly on my own but you can fly with groups i have my kindle ipad suits me and if i want to chat there is always someone near or in the pool.
  • Oh my goodness! How old are you? A cruise? That's for the oldies. Pull yourself together!

Have you looked at the demographics of people who cruise?

If crusing is for oldies then why is P&O's flagship, Britainnia, a family friendly ship complete with kids clubs?

Oh dear I'd best inform my 16 year old daughter who's cruised since she was 2 years old and absolutely loves it!

Consider staying in hostels, they are brilliant for solo travellers as you'll meet loads of other solo travellers. If that's what you want. You don't have to stay in a dorm, most have private rooms.

City trips are a good way to start - do walking tours, most big cities have free walking tours (tips only) which are a great way to see the city plus meet people. Some do evening tours eg dinners, pub crawls.

I do loads of travelling with family, with friends and solo, they all have their advantages and disadvantages but overall I have to say I prefer solo travel. You can do exactly what you want instead of having to compromise all the time, you can meet new people more easily, if someone annoys you you don't have to put up with them for the rest of the holiday etc.

I was under the impression cruises were for all ages? I know two young couples, one mid 20s, the other early 30s, who went on a cruise for their honeymoons, and both couples loved it

Personally, I don't see the attraction of cruising but I can't think of anything more frightening that a "family friendly ship with kids club". If I did go on one it would be for some peace and quiet.

Mind you, I have a friend who worked as a barman on cruise ships for a few years and said he'd never had as much sex in his life. ;)

People of all ages go on cruises, I went on a school organised cruise when I was 10 and loved it. In fact from what I've heard some cruise companies treat you like a child - for instance searching your bag for booze, telling you what you should tip by taking it off you by default, and telling you what to wear for dinner ;) So you might want to check reviews and avoid that sort of cruise company!

But that aside - not sure cruising would be the type of holiday for a solo traveller - if I were to ever go on one again I wouldn't do it alone.

Cruising is for all ages! There tends to be a younger demographic onboard during school holiday time and its a very popular holiday choice for singles.

We did our first cruise when we were early 30's and on our honeymoon and have racked up well in excess of 250 nights at sea with various cruise lines since then :)
