I'm in my late 20s, and losing weight seems to be a taboo subject around my larger friends. They say 'you've got a lovely pretty face, you don't need to lose weight', annoys me because I'm doing it more for my health and so I have a future, support amongst my friends is not great.

Ignore that comment and don't expect support from them. It may very well be true you have a "lovely pretty face" - BUT its your figure that needs working on. They're only jealous and trying to undermine you at some level (which they may not even realise themselves). The "support" you will get will come more from parents and men (eg a higher level of interested "looks" from men as you walk down the street will mean you are on the right track). You might also notice women in my agegroup (ie that would have been me then yesterday) noticing a younger woman was looking particularly attractive/well-dressed/etc and I expect I was probably smiling/nodding in approval of her looking good.

You are in the agegroup that is still interested in men and your friends probably don't fancy the competition you will be if you have a slim figure, as well as a pretty face.

I'm not in that agegroup any longer myself and gave up looking for boyfriends/etc some years back - as I lost interest. But, in my agegroup (where that losing interest in opposite sex isn't an uncommon attitude) I think there is an element of "misery loves company" and I can see that fatter women like having a moan together about limited choice of clothes and lack of willpower to resist chocolates and cakes.

I seem to recall that its necessary to be very careful what female friends to take clothes shopping with you - because of this jealousy factor and they might not be looking to help you find the most flattering clothes?

I must count as not influenced by that factor - as I do get taken clothes shopping and am genuinely out to find the most flattering outfit I can for my friend (usually starting with wondering what "her" colours are that will do the most for her complexion and then narrowing down into flattering styles).

Belsyboop - I save mine for Gin & Slim at the weekend. I know others like Maman and Denise do the same and save theirs for weekend wine.

Try it out and see how you get. I think a lot of people save syns up but I do some people find it doesn't work for them doing it that way but its worth a shot.

I avoid alcohol during the week as I am working and I find it sends me heading for the munchies so if I personally find it better for me to save it for the weekend. There are exceptions though! And I have been known to start early on a thurs night if I've had a looooong week in work :rotfl:or something has annoyed me!

    Afternoon!

Hope everyone's having a good day. Mine is dragging a bit but I need to get focussed on work and stop daydreaming about birthday celebrations at the end of the month!

lantana, I'm so glad you got a good weigh in at class. I know how you feel, that's why I haven't joined the challenge this time round, and why I stopped going to group and didn't go back. It's so disheartening when you know what you should be doing and you're kind of doing it, but it's not working and you've got to justify it to people. Sending positive vibes that this will be your year!

mary h, stay away from the scales! I was doing a milkshake diet once and I weighed in on different scales on different days. The first time with the second set of scales I was mega chuffed with my result, but when I went back to the first set the loss was lower and it nearly made me give up coz I thought I'd put on.

    Todays menu:
    B: Overnight oats
L: Jacket potato w/butter, salad, 2 boiled eggs (2 syns)
    D: Chickpea curry w/ rice attempt 2!
S: Popcorn (6.5 syns), possibly a banana this afternoon and probably fruit/quark tonight
  • I'm sneaking back in - I've been trying another eating plan as its from a company I joined as a 'member' (aka distributor) in order to pay less for bf's sports drink/post training protein bits however the Dr thinks I may have an intolerance to the products as I lost weight the first couple of weeks but since then I haven't and I've suffered with other symptoms including gas (gross, tmi sorry), bloating, poor digestion (when the products should encourage the opposite), headaches, nausea and more!

Well I know I need to grow a spine and accept the extra expense isn't working and isn't appropriate for us as a household as bf proposed over Christmas! So now there's an extra incentive to save money and lose weight! Now I just need to be brave and explain to my 'supervisor' the situation - I think I will 'sell' them the few bits of merchandise/products I have at a greatly reduced amount and maybe even give them the two customers I have (who are a royal pita anyway!) though I will use up the multivit tablets

I will weigh in with him next week and then have the chat.

Until then I'll be planning ready to get back on with SW from payday a week on Monday. We are going to try the sausages/meatballs etc from Iceland as Musclefood doesn't really compete on fresh meat prices now we have less freezer storage and can't take advantage of as many deals etc.

    Today:
Breakfast 30g branflakes (HeB) with 125ml ss milk (1/2 HeA) and a small banana
    snack: 2 satsumas
lunch: chicken salad: leftover roast chicken (no skin) with lettuce, cucumber and cherry tomatoes plus grilled green pepper. Yogurt (easi-yo - 80g/ml approx.) 4 syn and fig roll 3 syn
    snack: an apple
tea: savoury mince and rice - allowing 5 syn

Drinks: peppermint tea, water, NAS orange squash, normal tea with last of ss milk

    Plan for tomorrow:
breakfast: 30g bran flakes (HeB) plus 125ml ss milk (half HeA) and a banana
    snack: Satsuma
lunch: jacket potato, baked beans and chicken with lettuce, cucumber, beetroot
    snack: hard boiled egg
    tea: something with chicken breast
syns: not 100% yet as have an event in the afternoon which has some form of catering (canap!s or so)
drinks: water, NAS squash, peppermint tea

All I'm thinking is can I save my syns for a couple of vodka & Diet Cokes at the weekend? Or do you have to use them daily?

in 2005 Sw used to allow syns to be saved as long as you had a minimum of 5 syns daily, However.... They no longer advise saving syns as it continues to promote the binge/starving behaviour that got many people over weight to start with. They give flexible syns now instead. Depending how much you drink, if you ear free/superfree that day then your 15 syns should get you 5 x 25ml shots of vodka with as much diet coke as you want!

What you say is completely true, the support I get is from the more mature people in life, I find it difficult to comprehend my friends not wanting to support me, but it's easier for them to sit and eat cake then to get off their big behinds and do something about it. I tend to go clothes shopping with my mum or my best (male) mate, and as they give honest opinions, instead of saying everything looks nice, when I look like a sausage in a skin!!
I'll use this thread as a huge support as well... I guess I thought my friends might be happy that I'm trying to prevent health problems.

I avoid alcohol during the week as much as I can, because for some reason I always want cheese if I've had a drink!! I'll save some syns for weekend vodka... When I was at uni, just under 2 years ago, I drank nothing but pints and cans of lager, which has contributed to me being a size 22!!! So I've mostly left my pint drinking behind me... Vodka and Diet Coke only.

Mary I think I will save mine up and see if it works for me, at 25, I'm not quite ready to give up drinking completely!!

Belsyboop - The way some of us do it is to start off with 105 syns on WI day and work down to 0; but please do save some syns to have every day for things like sauce, gravy etc - nothing worse than a bacon butty with no brown sauce, LOL!

Good job you've changed from pints to Vodka & diet Coke - certainly saves plenty of syns.

This is what I am doing - I do a pub quiz every Thursday and I'm damned if I'm giving up my cider ;) So I budget my pub quiz syns then have an allowance for the rest of the week.

The pub quiz keeps me sane - I'd fall off the wagon a lot quicker if I didn't go or tried to kid myself that I won't drink. Also being a mid week pub quiz makes it easier to stick to a pre selected number of drinks as we can't go out afterwards.

I've never really understood the thinking behind flexible syns. To me it just sounds like: go totally OTT with syns, take the hit, draw a line and then get back on plan. I suppose it might be OK for a really special occasion like a wedding or a holiday but I don't think it's very helpful with everyday life. Most people (??) like to make the weekend different from the working week so that's why I choose to have most of my syns then. It's not as if I'm starving the rest of the time. Unless SW can explain a physiological reason I think it's all down to how you arrange your lifestyle and SW seem to work on the premise that you must have a treat every day.

I never weigh at home mary. Long before I joined SW, DH threw ours away as they were gathering dust because we didn't like what they said. I've never replaced them as I think if I did I might find myself weighing all the time.

I think you're right and the fact that you are doing something about it reminds them of that although I'm sure they'd secretly like to do what you're doing. I know people who try to give up/cut down drinking have the same problem. My SIL enjoyed years of telling me how she was fat because of her thyroid and because her bad ankle and asthma stopped her exercising (although I suspected her problem was biscuits and cheese). Then a year ago she joined SW and got to target just before Christmas.

Great hearing you so positive lantanna. I agree that the freezer is your friend when it comes to SW but also it's very mse:money:.
