Guests - how welcome are they, really?

  • I love having guests around and want them to feel at home, and so I don't mind which bathroom they use, including the en-suite.

We've even had guests who on a hot day have been offered a nice refreshing shower (in the en-suite, as main bathroom only has a bath) to which they have been very grateful.

[I'm always aware that I only feel comfortable being so inviting because Mrs bearcat is very house proud and keeps the place spic and span always]

This is the first time we've had a house with more than one bathroom, and though I wasn't craving it before, I really do like it and wouldn't go back to just one.

I do like having people around and enjoy the company of friends, though being totally honest I have also been known to fall asleep while they're here. They don't seem to mind me having a quick power nap though.

And underwear on the bathroom floor? Eew! Don't do that.

    snobbery?

Say the guest came to you and asked would you have said yes or no.

it's a toilet, I wouldn't be so mean as to say no, although i don't have such luxury's as a en suite. Unless i am using it at the time of the request i don't see it as a problem

When it comes to 'eateries' and people consuming food, there should ALWAYS be 2 doors between the public and the toilet.

There is much about it, but here is the first thing I found when I googled it.

    http://www.midsussex.gov.uk/media/Provision_of_Sanitary_Conveniences_in_Mid_Sussex_Guidance_June_2014.pdf

    It says on the document

"Toilets should not lead directly into rooms in which food is prepared or eaten. This means that there should be a lobby with two doors between the lavatory and the food room."

I actually thought this was well known information. Nevertheless, how could you NOT want 2 doors (at least!) to keep out smells!!!

This is why it surprises me that the Costas have a loo that opens directly onto people eating. Gross.

I've been in the Newbury one (Berkshire) and Poynton (Cheshire) recently and both have loos that open to the seating area.

Every Costa I've ever visited (and other coffee shops and restaurants too) has been like this. Makes you wonder how they get away with it given how strict Environmental Health Officers can be. I can see that Costa could possibly argue that they don't 'prepare' food since it all comes pre-wrapped (although they do warm sandwiches up), but I can't see how they get away with the loos opening into an area where food is eaten ...

Your home has a guest bathroom and an en-suite (accessed through the bedroom only), which you have proudly shown everyone as part of "the tour" when you moved in.

Are you bothered if one of the not-so-close friends uses your en-suite without asking first, as the guest bathroom is occupied?

Erm.. tour?? Do people even do that? How incredibly pretentious!

using the en-suite.. would you rather they pooped in a pot plant?? pmsl.. It's a toilet, its meant to be turded in.

I think some of you lot are crazy (not in a derogatory way) hahahaha .. pastures.. not putting your pants in a basket with other pants? do you not wash them all together? That made me chuckle that did... :p .. can you imagine how that could work in my house with 11 of us?? heehee... I may want you as a friend.. :) Do you not peg them on the line like you've got bunting??

When my children lived at home, all washing went into the 1 wash basket and then machine. As long as such things are done on a hot enough wash....

I couldn't care less which loo a guest uses, but I am horrified that people leave dirty clothes on the floor! Who leaves dirty pants on the bathroom floor???

I was heavily pregnant and my bump was huge. The ensuite was tiny and I couldn't reach when I tried to pick them up. My husband was already in the car waiting for me, so I decided to leave them there.

the one next to Birmingham arena also has the toilet door opening directly out onto the cafe - whats the issue? The toilet has a sink and drying facilities in there.

How would you feel if you had a downstairs loo that opened right out into the dining area where you were sitting only 2-3 feet away from the door, (and 6 feet away from the toilet itself,) eating your lunch or dinner, and having to inhale the smells that come from the person who has just been in there? Because that's what it's tantamount to. Still think it's OK now?

As I said, it's against the law anyway; don't know how Costa gets away with it...

I agree with this ^^^ And as I said, I struggle to fathom how Costa gets away with it. You say about their stuff being pre-wrapped, but lots of it isn't (like the cakes/bagels etc...) And even if it was all wrapped; it isn't when we eat it.

    I know, it's gross. :(

But the huge bump didn't stop you taking them off.

When I was heavily pregnant, I had no problem taking my pants off, and popping them into the wash basket. As I said, if you can take them off, you can pop them into the wash basket.

You leave your pants wherever you want in your own home, I for one won't judge you!
  • I agree with this. The most pretentious people I know insist on giving you a tour of their home. I hate it. It's a flamin' HOUSE !!!!!!. What am I meant to say? Yeah great utility, yeah great en suite, yeah great conservatory *yawn....* I have seen it all before and I am not impressed. People who show off their house are like baby bores IMO.

They think everyone else is interested and fascinated by what they have; but they're wrong. Some people with big houses/new houses even think people are jealous, but no-one is.

And this is just me, but......the people who are the most pretentious I know and love to show off their house, seem to have the highest mortgage and the biggest amount of debt.

What about if you've worked really really hard on your home to get it looking the way it does? My Dad worked his !!!! off back in the 90s to get his home looking amazing. Blood sweat and tears. And so he damn well gave guests the tour lol.
