Telegraph_Sam said:I agreed with Octopus that they debit my a/c for each month's consumption, no more and no less, and keep the balance at zero. Sure it's variable but saves all the ...ing around with credit and debit balances and winter consumption stargazing. Makes it easier to monitor also.
Would rather hold any credit balance in MY bank, not theirs.

Pay As You Go isn't a novel approach. 40-50 years ago it was the norm.

Pay As You Go isn't a novel approach. 40-50 years ago it was the norm. Those were what is now referred to as a 'standard credit account' and have a higher tariff cap set for them as they were payment on receipt of invoice, usually by cheque or cash.A variable direct debit for 100% of the bill should be possible with Octopus, it just isn't the default option.

You are paying a variable amount depending on your usage. But I don't think that is anything meaningful at this stage. I assume it's a holding position until the account is fully set up.

I believe that that is what you get when the common sense plus/minus zero approach is intended but as yet no amount has been billed.Telegraph Sam
There are also unknown unknowns - the one's we don't know we don't know0 -
I think it may have to do with the fact I cancelled the Avro DD. If there is no DD arrangement then payment on receipt of bill may have been assumed. I have since authorised a new DD so that may change in due course.

Go down that page and click on the old dashboard link to see the text I've quoted previously under Account Information. I take your point about "holding". We'll see.Incidentally, my holding address is no longer "9 Coral Drive etc" and I now live in a hyphen0

Congrats on your change of address. I hope you'll be happy there until your account is updated.
