  • I have more than enough credit to clear my next bill, (due for payment on the 2nd October), so with that in mind I have cancelled my direct debit.
Will this cause any future problems with the S.O.L.R.?
Whatever, it makes me feel better!
No. My Avro DD is due in the next few days and I am about to cancel with my bank. The SoLR will contact you to set up a new one in due course.
We can't do much (except cancel DDs) about what has happened so we might just as well relax and let things take their course. We'll sleep better.

When did you cancel your DDs? I cancelled my DD to Avro on Monday and I got a message saying it would take effect from midnight. My DD was due tomorrow.

My point is: Avro ceased trading today so, presumably the DDs to Avro are now with the SOLR? Will DDs cancelled today still be actioned? I don't know how it works.
    If in doubt... do nowt.

What readings will the new supplier use when you get transferred to them.
Will it be Avro`s last paid for reading for example my last paid up bill was for 30th Aug, the next bill would have been for readings on the 30th Sept.

If it`s the 30th August readings, that means the new supplier will charge at their SVR even though Avro supplied the energy at their rate up to today.
  • Deary me, just yesterday I was saying how reasonably priced Avro were, and now they're out of business!
Say hello to a disgustingly expensive new tariff from the new supplier / whichever one I end up switching to!
Agreed. When my 12 month fixed tariff ended in July, I looked at switching but, after comparing suppliers, I decided to sign up to another 12 months fixed with Avro. Still, even if I had switched, I may well have ended up with a supplier who has - or soon will - go under. Oh dear, how sad, never mind!
    If in doubt... do nowt.

"I'm in the broader group and Avro had pretty lax qualifications - last year I qualified by having a gross annual household income of £16,190 or less and being aged over 64. Got a £140 credit for two years and was never asked for supporting evidence.
Applications opened around the start of the first week of October so they won't this year and it's loss won't affect me."
    Report

Just shows you are one of the millions who do not need the help you get from the taxpayers.  Excuse me if I don't care you might miss out this year.  For those of us who are supposed to merit the WHD no matter what, I am somewhat concerned.

If you are in the 14 days cooling off period I believe you can cancel the switch.

It is day 13 today and the first payment was taken yesterday as you were correct in saying. I think I'll let it play out rather than risk getting in an even bigger mess.

Ah well, no £140 Warm Home Discount for me this season.
Does that not depend?  If you are core group and it still exists, you must be entitled to it though who knows how much of a fight we will face to get it?  If you are broader group, I would suggest contacting whoever takes us over.
It looks like the warm home discount should be paid correctly through your new supplier through Ofgem's mutualisation process:

"If a scheme supplier (or suppliers) fails to make a payment, Ofgem will process a mutualisation, whereby other scheme suppliers make up the shortfall, based on their market share."

    https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/sites/default/files/docs/2021/03/20210302_draft_whd_scheme_word_guidance_for_publication.pdf

This was actually used previously, in 2018, when
Economy Energy, Spark Energy, and Our Power ceased to trade. "Ofgem ... processed a mutualisation for the Core Group, as a supplier which ceased to trade failed to pay into the first interim Core Group reconciliation. Other scheme suppliers made up the shortfall of payment in the Core Group reconciliation, based on their market share."

In their 2018-19 report, Ofgem goes on to say "The customers belonging to these suppliers were taken over by other energy suppliers as part of the Supplier of Last Resort (SoLR) process and the vast majority of these customers continued to benefit from the WHD Broader Group and Core Group"

As I understand it, the SoLR will ask you to provide meter readings when they first contact you. It seems logical that they will use those readings to open the new account.

Banks usually cancel DDs with immediate effect.

  • This is the third time I have had a supplier go bust. I renewed with them last month as I had not had any problems - actually submitted my readins for Aug/Sept this morning.

    Hi.
Any thoughts…I’m in the middle of a switch to Avro (due to switch tomorrow) but they’ve already taken my first direct debit of £211…I had only just given them my meter readings this morning.
I suppose I just have to sit tight and see how it plays out? I’m still £600 in credit with Igloo, who I’m supposed to be leaving. Currently cruising out at sea so can’t phone Igloo for advice either.
At this stage you already have an account opened with Avro so funds in that account should be passed to the SoLR and should show as a credit to your SoLR account in due course.
