Jumping from Avro to Eon/Sainsburys is tempting. The concern is how long it would take to get back a refund from Avro if they went under.
Was made slightly easier for me as i've only got a fairly small balance there. I'll need to watch the account like a hawk over the next few weeks and make sure they've got no room for wriggle. As soon as i'm out the d/d is cancelled.

ps- just printed off my new Sainsburys agreement and more importantly i think my relatively recent Avro details.
  • If they go bust is our tariff honoured by the new supplier?
  • Thanks for all the comments, having spent a fun Sunday morning downloading all the information from my Avro online account it was all present and correct, and my recent meter reading from a few days ago (not sure why when I now have smart meters?) has been reflected online.  If they do have to hand over to a SOLR hopefully the records will be good, I had a torrid time with another provider who blamed a poor handover for totally messing up the account.  And to their credit I did actually get a next day reply by email re my DD.  Fingers crossed, touching wood, etc etc they get through this.

Hi Liamh32 and welcome to the forum.
You will usually be put onto the new supplier's standard variable tariff.

If a company goes bust mid switch, who is responsible for paying any cash credit you may have?
I know if you do not initiate a switch it’s the new supplier you are put with after a utility company goes under,

Well, if it's mid switch, that implies that the switch isn't completed, so you are still with the old company, Therefore the SOLR is responsible for returning your money.

No, there is no tariff protection built into the SoLR regulations. The aim of the regulations is primarily one of continuity of supply.

    Deemed contracts and customer balances

2.20. We will seek information on a SoLR’s proposed deemed contract rate.12 A SoLR’s deemed contract prices can reflect no more than the reasonable costs of supply (including costs attributable to the purchase of gas or electricity at short notice), together with a reasonable profit.

If the switch was initiated prior to the failure of a supplier, the switch will go through. The SoLR appointed to takeover rate failed supplier’s accounts will lay back any credit balances due to consumers who have already switched. That said, it will not be quick based on past supplier failures.

with a lot of smaller suppliers going bust, Im uncomfortable at sticking with Avro. But my account is in credit, and theyre notirously difficult to get hold of. What happens if I switch, and they end up going bust? How do I claim my credit back?
