Don't type in upper case. It's too difficult to wade through.

Where in the country are you located? I'm within the M25 and all the stores I've been in DO accept contactless.

I am outside the M25 and at least two local Wilkos take contactless.

I'm over 100 miles outside of London and have used contactless in my local Wilko.

Yes, contactless is accepted at Wilko, my addition was to the list that accepts. I see now it is listed under the old name Wilkinson (or maybe it was added recently?)

My second point is still missing, Post Office is not limited to London.

As you might expect from me I don't like spending money. When I do have to reluctantly buy something and I go to pay, it really gets on my tits when I pull out my TSB card and find out the shop still doesn't accept contactless! Which is one of the reasons I started this thread.

Its all very well having this bonus feature on the TSB accounts but unless you are a high spender, I can't imagine anyone hitting the £100 limit a month, as its so difficult to find any shops which take it. If petrol stations took contactless it would be easy to fill up £30 at a time. But they don't, none I've found anyway,

On the topic of petrol stations, I'll be shopping at Morrisons this week to get the 7p fuel voucher. Will purchase gift vouchers using contactless and use them to pay for groceries and petrol so I'm not affected by £30 limit.

Its not even bloody Christmas! Creme Eggs no way! ...

Why would you associate creme eggs with Christmas lol?
  • Yes, it seems one of your contributors suggested I should not present a report using capital letters only, re contactless debit cards. I reinforce that advice on the basis not one response has been recorded to my plea, hence I take the better option to make the message clearer
I "lost", for a short time, 3x£30, because I requested a sales person to assist me by purchasing a voucher for my mobile phone. "No trouble Sir, give me your debit card, which I did.. "That's it, all done" as the person handed back my card + mobile.
"Thanks, where is your card reader and I shall pay? No problem Sir ,you have already paid, with your contactless card... the helpful person had indeed swiped the card to make payment.. I was not even aware my new issue card was a "contactless card!!"
Alas, later that day I happened to check my on line bank statement: There it was, my £20 offtake followed immediately by the 3x £30 payments. to a mystery mobile!.
As your forum members have recorded ;Yes, you do get your money back immediately you inform your bank. In my opinion their number crunchers have assessed that with these cards ,sales will rapidly increase, impulse buying etc. Christmas is here. The banks are not troubled because presumably their profit will cover the losses. I now know the contactless card can be used 5 consecutive times to make a purchase, before locking out. Again I wager, very soon the upper limit will have been raised perhaps up to £90.00. I am very disappointed the cards have been issued and even more so regarding the Banks, " shame on you". I did get my card exchanged for the traditional format. Sadly All the various ways one can loss money with these contactless cards shall be revealed over Christmas.

Very strange story. A few points don't seem to make sense to me.

    - Do debit card transactions (contactless or otherwise) show up on your bank statement the same day? For me, it always takes a couple of days for them to show up.
    - How do you know the 3 x £30 transactions were contactless payments? TSB (and presumably therefore, Halifax, Lloyds and BoS) do not differentiate between different sorts of debit card payments. Do others? Which bank issued your card?
    - Had you previously attempted to make a contactless payment (intentionally)? Presumably not if you were unaware this facility was present on your card. Therefore it should not have been possible for the first contactless payment to go through without requesting a PIN. You should look back through your receipts to see if any other payments were made contactlessly prior to this.
    - You should also look back through the information you received when you were sent this card. I've never received a debit card without a leaflet explaining its features, and for my contactless cards I've always received a separate flyer highlighting it is contactless.

It seems like you've encountered a rogue sales assistant (it seems very implausible that those 3 transactions for exactly the contactless limit were generated by other genuine customers and somehow referred to your card). Had your card not been contactless, you still could have suffered financial loss had he instead skimmed/cloned your card and used it for 'cardholder not present' transactions.

TSB do, indeed, show 'pending' payments immediately online and they also show whether they were contactless or CnP (though the latter detail disappears when the transactions move from 'pending' to the main statement a day or so later.

The worst experience of card fraud I've had was in Brazil about a year ago - I don't know how or where it was done (I didn't see anything untoward at any point) but someone managed to clone my credit card and get the PIN. They managed to withdraw about £750 worth of Brazilian currency before I noticed what was going on and got the card cancelled.

The bank reversed all the transactions without question, so no financial problem, although it was a bit of a pain having to call several times as the different transactions came to light.

But it goes to show that chip & PIN isn't as secure as some seem to think it is, and criminals can get a lot more money than they could from contactless. As posted above, there's much less incentive for criminals to use contactless - the main reason being that it can't be used to withdraw cash, and having to use it for purchases puts them at greater risk of being caught on CCTV or recognised. Do they really want that risk just to buy a few low-value items?

This happens alot with cash machines. People install a fake front onto a cash machine which reads the card as you put it in and has a camera to watch the keypad. This data is all recorded then used to draw out large amounts of money.

this happened to a number of cash machines near where i used to live, everyone who used them ended up with empty bank accounts.

I know some who didn't get their money back either

Contactless makes paying quicker... but from the customer's perspective it's not really different to any other card transaction - why would you buy something using contactless that you wouldn't buy using chip & PIN (or cash for that matter)?
The banks are not troubled because presumably their profit will cover the losses.

Right, and the loss is the bank's not yours, so what's the problem?

Well you're not alone as there are quite a few people on this thread that are against contactless. But I think you're in the minority as I see people using it all the time.

Fair enough, and I'm in favour of giving the customer the choice. But you do realise that the "traditional format" cards also have weaknesses and the potential losses are much higher?
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning

I'm pretty sure it depends on the retailer. I used a TSB debit card in W H Smith at 9 am and in Costa at 10 am this morning, both contactless transactions, and now at nearly 3 pm the W H Smith transaction is listed as pending but the Costa transaction isn't yet showing at all.
