Quick question on logistics: With the switching service getting such a bad press, is there anything to stop me terminating my current (EON) supply - by filling in their house move / termination form - and then taking out a new contract with BG ? This surely avoids the whole "switch" process as I am effectively in control of the switch ?? I could always use a work address as my "new" forwarding address for the final EON bill.

Almost certainly wouldn't work. The "new" homeowner would automatically be on a deemed contract with E.On. As utilities were being used, bills would be sent to "The Occupier" until they established it was you, and you'd never actually left. Similarly, BG would notify E.On that they were taking over the supply contract in your name.
Switching works on the whole. I've done it many times and have always, and will continue to, avoided the companies who get bad publicity.

  • I'm currently on Fix and Fall Jan (or Feb) 2017 with smart billing. Is it worthwhile me switching to the new British Gas deal?

The new fix is going to be cheaper for you.
Just do a comparison with the energy club and that will give you a good guide to how much you could save.
  • I'm with BG and could save £160 per year with this deal BUT my current payment arrangement is Quarterly (variable) Direct Debit.

If I switched would BG honor this or would they push me onto a Monthly and Fixed Direct Debit (which I wouldn't be interested in as I like to pay for what I use being a pensioner and on a low in come.)

    Any ideas?

    Cheers.

    Hi Colin

The British Gas Collective tariff is only available if you switch to paying by monthly direct debit, so I'm afraid you wouldn't be able to stick with your current quarterly variable arrangement.

I hope this clarifies things for you.
  • MSE Dan L thanks for that, good job I asked!

I'll run with the EON Collective tariff then (not on this site) as it's £169 cheaper.

I have to sign up on a monthly DD basis but they can change it to variable DD after I've joined them. That's what they've told me (via email) anyway so I can hold them to it.

Bye bye British Gas after many years.

    Cheers...Colin
  • I ve signed up today after seeing the tariff details which as far as I can see make this deal the cheapest in the country. i ve moved over a bit from BGs cheap cousins Sainsburys Energy with no exit fee and £30 cashback. The tariffs on this collective are the cheapest I ve seen, easily beating the Uswitch Eon deal and I ve got the reliability of the best supplier in the UK avoiding the gamble of EE, GB energy, First Utility and other such high risk outfits.

The day before the collective gas email, I'd followed earlier advice about asking for credit money to be paid back and have direct debits reduced.

"Fight unfair energy direct debits" The very helpful Sainsbury's rep did both and I've received £268.53 into my bank account today. :T

Now ready to switch to the new British Gas tariff. :)

...that comment shows how much regional variation there is - the USwitch EON deal is almost exactly the same as this BG fix for me(within £10 according to my spreadsheets) -only positive is that it lasts a little bit longer -negatives are the exit penalty from EON (£60) AND switching to BG :rotfl:
