I spoke with British Gas a little earlier and they said there is FULL credit check when switching.
Martin Lewis says there is a soft credit check.
Anyone confirm which is correct?0 -
Hi
Can someone explain after inoputting my dtial for comapriosn the BG Collective Fix February 2017 comes up as 11th place! So it not the cheapest fix?
The cheapest that appear for me are:
1st place - Extra Energy (Fresh Fixed Price Feb 2017 v4) - why would i not switch to that?
2nd place E.ON - do they carry out a full credit check? There is contradictory information.
thanks
Hi jrsga
Just to let you know, we ask all customers thinking of joining us if we can carry out a full external credit check. We use this information to make sure we offer the right type of payment method. Searches appear on credit files but only applications for credit count towards credit scores.
Hope this explains.

Hi there
It sounds like you might have been given slightly incorrect information by British Gas. We asked it for details around its credit checking as part of the collective switch bidding process:
It told us that a record will be left on your credit file, but this is not marked as a full search. If the credit check identifies you as being 'high risk' it'll charge a security deposit of £125 for gas and £90 for electricity. The security deposit is automatically refunded after 12 months providing the account (or any accounts associated with you) is not in debt at that point.
I hope this helps.0 -
I can't believe MSE are going with British Gas after the Sainsbury's Energy debacle a year ago!
It has taken me a year to sort out the mess British Gas (aka Sainsbury's Energy) made of the switch and now am moving away from them never to return!
They even promised me a whole £20 for the inconvenience - which of course never materialised.
Hi Steve465, sorry to hear you had trouble with Sainsburys Energy and get why it could put you off but we operate as a separate company and I'm sure you won't regret it if you sign up to our Collective Tariff. Lets hope I get the cash back from the switch this time as I'm still waiting on the last one after it didn't get paid due to British Gas requesting a deposit which was subsequently cancelled following a complaint as I was an existing customer on Sainsburys at the time
Hi davethorp, I totally understand you don't want to lose out on your cashback & and I'll be happy to look into this for you. I recently changed to the Collective Fix Dec 2016 and got my £30 for switching. Is it true that I can now switch again to the Feb 2017 fix and get another £30 and not be penalised by BG for changing so soon?
Hi JoMull, that's right. You won't get any cancellation fee as long as you're switching to another deal with us. Cheers, MattI am the official company representative of British Gas. Phoned BG this am to confirm no exit fees and was told there would be exit fees even though I was a BG customer and would remain a BG customer on a different tariff. Is this correct or should I try again? Coo not wish to be penalised and miss the chance to reduce bills. Lyn

That thought had struck me, too, but it seems that one can't change the name on the CEC account. (E-mail & property addresses can be changed, but not the name!) Have gone for the switch, anyway. Fingers crossed that there aren't any issues.
