Oh dear, in an act of monumental stupidity Microsoft is going to automatically download W10 to your machine from next year and bombard you into upgrading. This will not end well, expect an increase of support calls and a flooded MSE techie forum.

Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.

I've already had my machine (W7) try to download the install files (which came through as an important update) and then a big nag screen trying to get me to update.
I've stopped (for now) the download (I think) and just closed the window.
Now to see what happens next......:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:
Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.0 -

Only if your settings allow it to do so.

Hmmm, we'll see, I've learned to develop a healthy scepticism for company spiel. Perhaps this was just a dry run for next year:

They've already been sneakily downloading W10 and they 'accidentally' set it to auto install a few weeks ago, I can fully understand why they are pushing to get people onto Windows 10 but I'm getting increasingly irritated how forceful they are getting with it. At least with smartphones/tablets, the hardware is fixed so companies have more ability to force updates since they have control of both the hardware and the software. Windows of course is entirely different and they don't seem to be carrying out any sort of upgrade assessment before pushing Windows 10 to people. I have an older W7 Vaio that has some non-standard unsupported hardware (in particular its integrated/discrete graphics switching system), Sony didn't support anything past 7 yet the system was prompting me to install W10.
It concerns me how much of a mess it's going to be when they try to auto install W10 on any W7 and above machine. Particularly as the only way I know to stop the prompts is to uninstall certain updates then hide them rather than just have a 'not interested' button which should clear itself up instead.

Yep, I had an issue a couple of weeks ago when an update arrived that would not let me get out of downloading and installing 10. Thanks to advice on this forum I turned OFF recommended updates on my main PC and my lappy. I had to do a restore to get back to NORMAL. I don't mind being given stuff for free BUT important questions have never been answered: -
1. will updates for 10 continue to be free?
2. will drivers for ALL peripherals be available, e.g. my printer which is several years old now but works with 7?
3. will software that is already loaded on my 7 machine continue to work with 10 and, if it doesn't will Microsoft do anything about it for free? I doubt it. Will they provide updated software for free? What about programs that are no longer available like MSMoney that worked on XP and grudgingly works on 7?0 -
The 2 nag updates (KB2952664 and KB3035583) are now "important" rather than "recommended".0

My partner has an Acer Aspire One netbook running Windows 7 Starter and has the Windows 10 update icon displayed. I selected it to see what came up and it said it was Win 10 compatible, however the Acer site says it hasn't released appropriate Windows 10 drivers for this netbook.
My concern is that it could get updated to Windows 10 but then not run properly. I've switched auto updating off but this isn't an ideal option.
Microsoft seem to assume that all Windows 7 pc's can be automatically updated to 10 but the hardware manufacturers aren't keeping there drivers up to date for older equipment.
I can see many users finding there pc's being adversely affected by this update and not being able to restore back to the previous version successfully.0 -

The post above yours has the updates you need to uninstall and then hide (the one ending in 83 I think is the main one that generates the notifier), it sometimes takes a couple of goes but after that your machine shouldn't get any Windows 10 and you can go back to getting your normal updates.
I agree with your post, I disagree with the pushy approach anyway but at the very least I'd expect them to check the machine hardware first and only push the update if it's a machine known to work fine with Windows 10 and fully supported by the manufacturer. Given the age of Windows 7 there must be a large number of machines that are getting the update and haven't been supported by the manufacturer for a long time.

.....and of course that is going to happen!
If they're going to force a new OS install onto a machine then they should be doing compatibility checks first, they've always had a mechanism for doing so previously so they can do this time. Windows 8.1 machines will probably be fine but many W7 machines won't be, I've received no warnings on a machine I know is not at all compatible with anything beyond Windows 7 and if Win10 was forced on it would not even boot properly.
