That's insane, how many hours is that for? Do they get a snack or anything?
Would you consider using a nanny share or an au pair? Or are there any parents of your DC who could pick up a few days a week?

None of our friends kids live in the same area and we don't know any parents yet, that might be an option in P2 or 3 maybe. Breakfast club is from 7:30 to 9 but only need it from 8:15 and he'll have had breakfast. After school is from 3 to 6. Our preferred non-catchment school doesn't even have a breakfast club so will need to look into childminder option for the morning. Will also need to find out if they take childcare vouchers as that might help.

Ah I see, you might just have a year or so paying out a bit then. I'm pretty sure most places take the childcare vouchers so definitely worth investigating ESP if you are claiming the maximum amount.

Just had a look at after school and breakfast club at our catchment school. 400 quid a month (11 after school a day, 7 breakfast club a day)!!! DS is paying less going to nursery just now. I thought this would get better once one starts school. We can't afford to keep paying money like that. At the same time it would be impossible to be at the school gates till 9 and then at 3 again even a few days. How do people work with school aged children? Sorry rant over

Hi Thrifty, that is a lot of money :( I pay just under 200.00 a month and find it a stretch. It's almost like I have to pay to go to work, but I simply cannot afford to go part-time any more after switching last January. It's an awful amount of money 400.00:eek: Where's the school-Bishops Avenue, lol.

Hi everyone, well to say this morning I had a shock is an understatement  Some members here may remember mousegate earlier this year? Well, I was getting my youngest ready for school. I put his first shoe on then went to put the second one on. It wouldn't go on.I looked inside and flung it! The cat had only killed a mouse and placed it in his shoe    I flung the shoe into the passage and shut the door, the cat ran to get the mouse out and everyone was too scared to go and pick it up and chuck it out :o I was petrified, in the end I had to do it. It was awful! I hope he doesn't put it anywhere like that next time, lol.

I haven't spent anything today, but I've spent far more than I should have so far, so not best pleased, but what can you do at this time of year? It was expected-just wish I didn't have to.

Today I'm grateful for, working from home, being safe and warm and being able to provide for me and the children . Take care everyone :)

Actually it's a community centre bang in the middle of a not so nice council estate. But because they cater for 3 primary schools in the area I guess they pay premium insurance to cover the pick up etc. The one for our ideal school does still cost 220 and that is just for after school club. We joust live in the wrong area. Other end of town (not better nor worse) is a lot cheaper. Might also try the school where I work as one of us will always work near the centre.

Part time doesn't really work for me either. Would not be enough hours 9:30-2:30 to do my job (research tech) and most of our team are already pt. Will just need to cope. Hopefully in P2 or 3 it will get easier and we got to know friends mums etc

  • Hi everyone :)

Not had a chance to catch up with the thread yet so sorry if I've missed anything and hope you're all doing good :)

NSD today for me :) at work and left my purse at home :D got a banana with me to snack on when I have my break later and will be sitting outside (in the car as weather isn't too good!!)

Been trying to drink water today rather than fizzy, so far so good, only had a little bit of fizzy from a can I opened last night :)

Three things I am grateful for today:
    1. Hot water so I could have a lovely bath <3
    2. My husband for putting up with me having the window open all night because I was hot (rare for me!)
    3. My colleagues at work because they're lovely :)

    xx

GSRcat - I used to volunteer at my DS's school when he was in reception, the staff just took total advantage and I quit. The final straw was when they asked me to sort out the dressing up cupboard, it was a total mess and I felt very used.

Thrifty - DS's primary school do a breakfast club from 8am to 8.50am for £2.day, it isn't much use if you have to travel far for work though and start early. It used to be 8.20am to 8.50am and was 50p. They don't do after school club at all. I would have to have a childminder. When you get a school sorted there will probably be some childminders doing the school run and they may have spaces, I think their details are on the council websites.

    traveller - what a naughty kitty:rotfl:.

Has anyone seen the new Sainsburys Christmas ad with Mog? It is really funny.

I must admit, I feel very fortunate as our breakfast club for 2.50 a day is open from 7.40 am, as you say Dolly, you have to factor time getting into work. Choccielover - I wish i was hot last night. I was freezing, lol

    .

I'm glad it's not just me who has had a horrible experience. I'm sorry you had this experience too. To make things worse I used to teach so it's made me feel so rubbish to be treated in this way. I sent a very professional letter outlining my background and asking to update my knowledge with the curriculum etc. At first I was given tasks to do then gradually admin jobs no one had time to do. Other parent helpers are given classroom tasks such as reading so it feels like a slap in the face.

Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi All

GSRCAT - sorry to hear things aren't great with your OH. Funny enough the health visitor was giving it all that about how important it is to talk to your partner after a new baby. But the advice could be equally applicable when it's very busy. I feel very guilty of reducing talk to the bare bones of which job needs doing when, what home work is needed when, which bill must be paid when, with my OH and I always feel strained when things are like that. Hugs and I hope you can get it into a better place again soon. Also sorry your voluntary work is taking the mick slightly.

Thrifty - I must admit that one of the reasons I set up my business was to be able to do school hours. It's only doable because I'm the boss but until recently I did all the after noon pick ups and OH did all the mornings. We have just had the one child to think of so that's been easier than many people have it but still. I hope you can find a workable solution. Is there a notice board in the school yard at the new school that you could post your details on for anyone seeking a nanny share/au pair/gap student to pick the kids up and bring them home?

Apple - what has been happening with your OH? You mentioned him recovering a few times but I don't think I saw from what. Hope he's ok.

Mothernerd - your description of your son's made me think of the Doons from Lorna Doon. Have you read it? It describes how each son had to fill a doorway on his 21st birthday to be a real Doon man. Anyway rather fanciful of me but that's how I'm imagining them :)
Today has been a NSD. Am sitting here having a cuppa with the family. Went out earlier but Barney nearly blew the buggy down the road.

CCL - you are the same height as TOG then, she is also 5ft 1.
