TalkTalk website hit by cyber-attack

I can't quite believe the hysteria that has been whipped up about this. If people think back to when we happily gave our bank details to anybody, oh yes - and our signatures (remember cheques).
I'm sure those who have stupidly allowed themselves to be scammed by someone phoning them alleging they were from TT and asking for pin numbers, passwords, access to their computers etc. would be scammed by somebody saying they're from their bank or Microsoft et al, and would have allowed themselves by their own stupidity (or, OK in some cases vulnerability), to be scammed.
They are far more at risk when they order over the phone and freely give the pin number of their debit or credit card to some anonymous person in a mail order dept.
Beware of the new breed of scammers - Compensationn Bandits. They'll be jumping on the bandwagon no doubt.
No, I'm not with TT but I do have two very sensible friends - both in their 80s who are with TT and have simply said they'll just follow their usual careful viligence with their money.
As for setting up DDs - the Banks are far more security conscious than they ever were, and whenever I've had to set up a DD I've had to go into my bank and sign an authorisation, with a signature that any hacker wouldn't have.0 -

I can see where you`re coming from with this and do agree.
But what we have here is a multi-million pound company skimping on security and not protecting our data simply to increase their profits.
You could accept it the first time but not three times in eight months.0 -
I rang Talktalk business today to cancel my landline/broadband...not related to the hack....and in the course of our chat the fellow on the other end told me their computers still run Windows Vista !0

IF and a big IF only a few sort codes and random account numbers were stolen , how come the whole website is still off line 6 days later?
what has the main site got to do with accounts ,
I keep getting a feeling that what we have been told , inc the arrest and bailing of a minor is not the whole truth ,
I think its "gone" , as mentioned late last week , info copied and the locks changed , and TT have not paid for the new keys yet.
and don,t start about "encryption" , what has that to do with the main site?0 -

No surprise there: ATM machines still run on little more than XP.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
You can only leave TT for free if you`ve been robbed.
TalkTalk has said it will only waive termination fees for customers wanting to end their contracts if money is stolen from them.

I'm happy to report that the Manila based TT call centre operative I spoke to was able to confirm that I am 'out of commitment'. Mind you it took some doing for me to drag that fact out of her, I had to resort to fairly forceful language to stop her being evasive and make her answer my simple and direct question instead of trying to tell me my data is safe yada yada.. BS BS.
So tiresome.0 -

I guess if it isnt TT it will be someone else or some other company. I wonder what operating system they use on their servers? Could it be windows?
No matter, There is a 15 year old boy who lives on a council estate in Ballymena who is looking for some careers advice. Maybe TT should employ him?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -
Joe, one bit of advice don`t ring them.
When their site eventually gets up and running again,do the online chat.
That way you`ve got an exact record of what was said and offered.
Last week I actually had chat line with Sky, to who I was thinking of moving to.
Long online chat, wanted me to sign there and then,I said NO.but the deal ends Thursday, but, no doubt, others will follow;
I asked for copy of my chat, and I will come back to her, she said said OK,BUT, no e-mail with it,
How do you obtain a copy of Chat with TT et.al?
I've made one phone call already,they offered 6 months @ £7.50 then £15 for next 12 months,NOGO.
Newbies get 18 months @ £7.50 + voucher, I will be happy with 12> 18 months @ £7.50, same as what I've been paying. Gone up to £15.now.AsI said, I don't really want to leave, had 15 years of relatively good service from them. This debacle hasn't bothered me.par for the course today. It's dragging on a bit.
TT may not survive it???
EDIT;; Cannot Chat till sites back up..0 -

Get out clause from breach of Their T&c's
Account number: (Write your account number here)
This is formal notice that I am closing my account following the cyber attack on your systems on October 21.
Section 18 of your terms and conditions states: ‘We’re committed to protecting and preserving any information you give to us.’
Additionally, your Privacy Policy states that you will only share information with organisations outside of TalkTalk with the customer’s consent.
I believe that TalkTalk is in material breach of these clauses. The most recent hacking attack was the third on TalkTalk’s systems in a year and represents a failure to secure customers’ personal details. It has exposed my personal information to third parties whom I do not consent to have it.
I am therefore asking you to terminate my contract without penalty. I require written confirmation that you will allow me to move to a new provider at the earliest opportunity. I also require written confirmation that you will cease processing my personal data.
I look forward to hearing from you within 14 days.
Sincerely,
[Add your printed name here]
