    Difficult one:think:

If your current car is still reliable and not incurring too many expensive bills for repairs/replacement parts I'd be tempted to stick with what you already have and keep on saving for a younger car.

The only 'plus' in buying the Toyota, in my view, is that you probably trust the family member who is selling the car and you probably already know the car and all its little idiosyncrasies and past history.

I'm in worse position than you with a very old car which is suddenly beginning to cost more and more to repair:mad:. I may have to resort to replacing it sooner rather than later with something cheap and cheerful:(

    Good Luck:beer:

    Thanks for the advice carbootcrazy

Its a funny one at the moment, I don't actually know a lot about the car. My gut is telling me to carry on saving however, I'm having an issue with my battery at the moment so its urging me to save even more quickly.

I think I'm going to continue saving rather than make a rash decision on the wrong car just to switch. i have my £1000 emergency fund for things like car repairs etc so i suppose that is there to use in situations like this until i can get my £5000 saved.

If it's just a battery problem I wouldn't worry too much. New ones aren't all that expensive and they are just 'wear and tear' items that we all have to replace from time to time. Your EF shouldn't take much of a hit.

I know several people who have made rash decisions about buying a car in haste (OH for one and I always thought he was astute where cars were concerned;)).

    Good Luck:beer:

Sad new as my car finally died on me. :(

This meant a new car was a must - the 2nd EF is wiped out and the main fund is down to £2701.13 aka 30.01% so a huge drop.

Back to almost the start to build it back up.

On the bright side - car is pretty new so shouldn't have any repairs to pay out on it for a good while.

    keep on keeping on

  • Sorry to hear about the car. Dobbibill, but at least you've been brilliant at building up some great emergency savings that have been enough to ease the pain.

On the plus side, as you say, maintenance/repair costs will be a minimum for a few years:T. 'Knowing' you, you'll have a healthy EF again before you know it.

Happy motoring:beer: (not that I'm advocating drink-driving of course;))
  • I came on here in the first place to share some great news and got sidetracked when I read Dobbibill's post so replied to that first. Sorry I haven't been on here much lately, RL has a nasty habit of keeping me occupied on much less pleasant activities:(

I received a letter on Monday saying my PPI claim had been upheld and a cheque for £1458 would reach me within 28 days:j:j:j:j. I know it isn't anywhere near the amount that some people reclaim but it was only on a short loan and this payout will mean the world to me in my current financial state.

I never had PPI on a lifetime of loans and other things except for a very small amount from many moons ago that I was repaid after a lengthy fight which eventually involved the Ombudsman. This current one was one I didn't even know for sure I ever had PPI on:o, (I still, can't understand why I ever took it out as it was so unlike me), I just had a gut feeling that just maybe I did. The company could find no record:( but said if I could supply any old statement or other paperwork they'd investigate it again. It was from so long ago that I was all set to let it go as I knew I had no paperwork from that far back. I doubted that I ever had it anyway. Then totally by chance I discovered a solitary old statement from 2001 amongst piles of genealogy paperwork that I was flicking through one last time before recycling and lo and behold it showed the PPI on it:j

The company concerned were very good and it was only a few weeks before they got back to me with the result. I won't update my total until the cheque is received and cleared but I just had to come on here and share.

I hope everyone is doing well at the moment. Sending hugs and positive vibes to anyone who needs them.

Well done carbootcrazy - brilliant news.
I hope it comes sooner rather than later.

    #2 update too......
added £182.38 so new total now stands at £2883.51 aka 32.04%.
Almost at a third already - gonna keep plodding on.

    keep on keeping on everyone

  • Brilliant news that your Psychotherapy business is doing so well, Helen:j:beer:. You really deserve success as you've worked so hard for it despite major health setbacks and upheavals in your family life:A

I'm sorry you're feeling exhausted but I suppose that's to be expected at the start. Just make sure you take good care of yourself and do your best to snatch a bit of 'me' time whenever you get the chance;)
