"comfort rooms" isn't an Americanism and it's not an expression that I've ever heard used in the USA.
I believe that the term is generally only used in parts of Asia.
The Americans (and other nationalities) may well think that many of the terms we use are also ludicrous.

That expression is slightly different as it's in general and accepted use in the UK and appears in most, if not all UK dictionaries.
It's a bit like "cul de sac", "duck a l'orange", "A La Carte" and "Au Pair".0
