I'd be interested to know if anyone else who spent under £100 had the same experience.
My first failed contactless (activating) transaction did not get any cashback. I haven't had any failed transactions since then.

I got £3.24 for September, spot on what I calculated from successful contactless payments. I did not carry through with failed ones but used a different cash back card instead.

My wife and I both got ours too.

Interestingly for both of us the amount was more than expected. I got the full £5 when my actual contactless spend was slightly under £100 and my wife was a fair bit lower, but still got more than 5%. I can only assume that we did get credit for failed contactless transactions, as my spreadsheet calculating the amount we were due back was correct.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else who spent under £100 had the same experience.

A contactless payment transaction made on 29.09.15 was paid for September, even though it showed up on my statement as 01.10.15. Looks like they count when the transaction is made, not when it appears on your statement - worth knowing about ;)

Yep I asked TSB this question and they stated it was date of transaction not the one on statement that is used.

Interesting as I got just under £5 on both my cards which seemed a bit high - I didn't start using my cards till second half of Sep and every third or so contactless payment was failing so had to insert card. Didn't keep exact record but pretty sure the only way I got close to £100 transactions was including the ones I had to insert card for.

I made at least one, maybe two payments by CnP to reactivate the contactless before I decided to just withdraw a small amount of cash, so as the statement doesn't differentiate between them it's hard to check their calculation.
  • I got £3.88. If all my purchases made with the TSB had been paid it would have been £4.84. So the "failed" contactless purchases were not paid. I do most of my contactless shopping at the Coop. Using my Halifax clarity card contactless I never have had to use chip & pin. But the TSB fails about every third shop or so, makes you wonder why?

I kept a record via YNAB, with a Contactless category, so I can keep a tab on how much of the transactions done contactless and how much they have added up too, I didn't get paid for the failed contactless payments in Morrisons, or Shell, or Coop...

Lets see what next month brings...

  • I made a point of using Morrisons petrol station to obtain TSB CB.

£28 went to pay and contactless declined and told we only do up to £20. Wonder why when the limit was changed to £30? Seems a scrappy roll out of contactless limits and retailers overall so TSB is perhaps premature in this scheme with such a seemingly high refusal rate for different reasons.

    Paid with credit card instead.

    £1.40 cashback lost.

Not the end of the world but galling all the same.

Who knows what TSB's motivation for launching the incentive is - I can't see what it profits them for customers to use contactless more often. However, there is no point waiting until the system is ubiquitous and has a high payment limit (I'm sure it will continue to rise in the future). This seems like about the right time to launch a scheme if their intention is encourage more people to adopt contactless. Much earlier and there were too few retailers offering it to gain much traction; much later and they'd have missed the boat.
