thanks Pincher, but i was suggesting a split rather than just making the purchase with another card, in order to get 5%cb on the bulk of the intended purchase.

I don't expect contactless to work with any pay-at-the-pump station, because they need to pre-authorise/validate the card before switching on the pump.

...unless anyone on here tells me otherwise.

    Me, me, me.

With all the Gas and Dash incidents, petrol stations may very well have to do it in the future, but not quite yet.

First of all, Shell in Watford takes Contactless, and you have to queue to pay at the kiosk.

Secondly, I get a lot of

    Pay at Pump

    Pay at Kiosk

    choices.

If I press "Pay at Kiosk", how do they pre-authorise?

I did used to have to pay in advance in America, though.
You pay, say $30, by cash or by credit card, in the kiosk, and that's how much you get. How do I fill up a full tank? Good question, I never asked. I expect they will give me some change if I overpaid.

Now that you brought it up, it would be a serious problem if a thief steals your card, buys a £300 computer, and asks the shop to do 10 partial payments.

I forgot my PIN, he says.

Could be an option if the cashier can handle it.

In which case, he cannot use the card at all.

Used TSB contactless card successfully on three occasions last week, i.e. Morrisons shop, Morrisons Petrol and Aldi.

    Today:
Failed at Aldi (but accepted my Barclays contactless)
Failed at Morrisons shop so input PIN
Worked at Morrisons shop 10 mins later
Failed at Morrisons Petrol 5 mins later (used cashback CC instead)

    Not a good start.
  • Took them a week to contact me via 2nd class post saying that I need to go to a branch with proof of ID as they couldn't do it online. Done, account setup. Now waiting for my contactless card to arrive

My local BP petrol station accepts contactless and also adds points on a Nectar card, so that's an option for me going forward, even if slightly dearer (before factoring in the cashback).

  • I have just received the following message from TSB's Twitter account...
Hi I'm Andrew. Thanks for your tweet. There are a number of reasons why your card may keep requiring you to enter your 1/4

PIN when completing contactless transactions. This is a security measure put in place to ensure that you are still 2/4

in possession of your card. As long as the transactions you attempt fall within the contactless limits and are 3/4

initially attempted by contactless payment, they will be eligible for the cashback offer. I hope this helps.

That's rather positive news if true.
