Savvy Shopper! I've been Money Tipped!
    Hi All

So a lovely day out was had. Although we cut it semi short as son seems to be coming down with something and was running a temperature. But we managed the Monument, & before we got there saw the fun sight of the annual free men of London being allowed to drive their sheep across London bridge. Had no idea that was happening today and it was really not something you see every day! Grown men and women dressed up like shepards/Bo peep.
There also seemed to be some kind of marathon going on. A motorcycle rally and the churches all had their bells going.

After the Monument we went to the Museum of London & had our packed lunch in their wonderful lunch room for schools. It was completely empty but for us. It's great when museums have such budget friendly facilities.

We decided to come back at 3 and have since made it home where I have a fresh tomato, basil & onion soup in the oven. All it will need is to throw it into the blender once the tomatoes have collapsed.

We did let son have an ice cream from the van on London bridge which was a mistake as they wanted £3 for it (no prices on the van) & as he ordered a lemon one which turned out to be very sweet like sorbet. He didn't eat it and OH had to. But other than that we only spent on travel cards, 2 coffees in pret & a pack of cough sweets the whole day.

The glorious weather made it a good day for a mooch too.

Have put out some washing to dry and popped another load on. Looking forward to a chilled evening. If son is still not well in the morning OH will work from home. I think it is probably just a cold but you never know.

Oh and Downton on tonight too :)

  • Fmess - just wanted to say well done on getting the extra work - and being able to earn whilst wearing your jamas is brilliant! And tee hee to the things/thongs text...

bob - I think we have bought from that ice cream seller too! Sounds like you had a truly memorable day.

A super quiet day here, with the rugby on in the background. But therefore another NSD in the bag.

Fmess I love living on my own, bit too much.

Had a lovely day doing few jobs, repainted my dressing table, covered a dressing table stool with old jade coloured cardy. Making use of my new staple gun. Then painted benches I have built on top of walls out if decking, used up all the decking paint even touched up decking as well. So chuffed makes such a difference.

    No spending day again.

However my double glazedkitchen window has blown well misted up, just been reading repair advice, think will have to get a glazier to fit new panel. So annoying as like looking out onto my garden. Houses grrrr.

Right bath soak, wine and Downton Abbey. Dinner left over roast from yesterday.

Think I'm going to go for 18 NSDS next month and reduce my grocery budget to £80..

  • Hi everyone!

SFD for me today. We made the most of open doors weekend and had another free outing, this time to an Elizabethan town house. Plus, no parking to pay for today as it was within walking distance.

Went to do house viewings. 2 people didn't turn up and one was very late so my current tenant ended up showing her around after I had left. Have had some more interest though so have arranged some more viewings this week.

Also had another business booking, just waiting for deposit to be paid tonight.
  • I have been looking at a bungalow for under £17,000. DS3 has kicked me off his bookface and I am back on mine and getting notifications which must meet the criteria as ones I was looking at about three years ago. The bungalow is on Flotta, one of the Orkney Isles, so basically train to the very top of Scotland, two hour ferry to the main Island and then a between the islands ferry to get to Flotta (there is a plane service as well). The bungalow needs work to make it habitable and when I checked for local builders, there were none.

So a lovely day dream but it will have to stay a dream. I think I have reached the time of life when I need access to doctors, hospitals, shops and the library. I am reading another thread and people on there are talking about the limits/ cost of public transport in rural areas. Would still like more land for growing and follow the tiny house and log cabin self-builds with interest.

I also think that in a small community (island or village) there is more pressure to 'get on' with everybody and there are times when I want to retreat behind my own front door and stay there. (Retreats back inside shell)
My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.

mothernerd obviously our community will have people with useful trades - I'll start making a list: Doctor, builder, dentist... That place sounds ideal, I might have a look! I do agree about being able to retreat indoors, I don't think many people on those islands are particularly sociable types but I'd like to be able to say hello to a neighbour or two every few days :)

Mothernerd - are you familiar with the tiny house movement? It may be more an American thing but I have seen so much about it that appeals. Basically a lot of people are buying tiny houses to live in that are things like a trailer located wherever you want to be. It's s bit up from a stationary caravan by the looks of it but some of them are absolutely stunning. Worth a Google anyway :)

  • Good Morning everyone,

I am loving the talk about living in a wee island community, this is something I have daydreamed about :) I remember watching one of Kevin McCleod's shows where he went and visited people who were living off grid. There was one family living on their own island somewhere hot and prone to earthquakes; one in the jungle (Belize I think) where there were scary animals and the Dad had to patrol their land for other men that may do them harm; another living at the foot of an active volcano; and a couple staying out in the woods in a really cold part of Sweden (I think). I liked some of the ideas of living remotely but these were generally going a bit too far for me. I love my own company/my families company but it is nice to have others in your community to interact with at least sometimes and to have some basic home comforts. I also don't want to live near dangerous animals, people or extreme climates

My DD and I have come down with the lurgy that everyone else seems to have. We both woke up yesterday with dry throats and feeling a little congested but not too bad so we set off for our planned 2/3 hour walk, boy were we glad to get home by the end of it. Both off school/work today. Meant to have a NSD yesterday but I opted not to take bottles of water with us on our walk (weren't bringing bags and couldn't be bothered carrying them the whole way!) and bought a couple during our walk instead. So only possible to make 14 out of the planned 15 NSDs but should be possible as have enough groceries in and I've set aside money for my buses. Being at home today will also help with this. After an afternoon nap yesterday I did manage to get up enough energy to make a pot of veg soup and some flapjacks so that's DD and I's lunch sorted for today.

On Saturday I booked tickets for 3 shows for us to see during our trip to New York and my Mother In Law who is meeting us there gave us the money to buy these as a Christmas present. This was a very generous and much appreciated gift (it was over £200 each for the tickets) :heart2:
