Printer cartridge fraud

I went to Staples to buy a new printer. The 2 that found suitable were a Canon and an Epson. On the canon it showed the cartridge capacity - the cartridge number and how many pages it could print. There was the basic one and the XL one; the basic was shown to be included and could print 180 pages. It was a similar story with the Epson although it did not mention what was included or not. I took the Epson the till assuming it came with the basic cartridges.
The cashier told me to buy extra cartridges as the ones contained in the box were only 'starter' cartridges and could only print 20 pages. I asked him to show on the box where it mentioned this but he was unable to do so. So I assumed the cashier was try to pull the wool over my eyes to spend more money on cartridges.
Lo and behold when I opened the box at home, I found there were only 'starter' cartridges. Brilliant!&*&*&
Now I can argue that the box did not have any indication of this; in fact the box labeling was misleading in hinting that there were basic cartridge in the box. However, if I go back to Staples and complain they will say 'we told you so'.
Where do I stand on this one?
btw the 'starter' cartridges are useless in more ways than one. You can only print around 20 pages and you cant refill them with third-party ink as the tank is blocked.

EDIT:- Never mind you said yourself it doesn't say what's included. Epson haven't mislead you - you've misunderstood.
I suspect they come with starter cartridges because going home and finding out you have to go back out into town to get cartridges is far more annoying than only being able to print a few pages until you're next in town.
Also having worked in Currys/PC World you'd be surprised how many people think we were pulling a fast one only to come back to the store later.0 -
You were informed before you bought and assumed wrongly...guess who is at fault?0
-
I don't understand.
Did the box say "Full Ink set of Cartridges"? If not, tough.
Sorry, but you're on a hiding to no where, not only do the manufacturers not need to state a full set of ink cartridges are included, but you were told by the retailer.
You assumed something, the staff told you otherwise, you ignored them and purchased it anyway. Go buy a set of ink cartridges.0 -
And you may well find that refilling the cartridges will wreck the machine and invalidate any warranty.0

Printer Manufacturers = Razor /Razor Blade Manufacturers, thought everyone knew that!0

Although I ended up buying the Epson and not the Canon, the Canon box listed the basic and XL cartridges and how many pages they printed. Against the basic it said that it was included. That told me that there were basic cartridges in the box which would print several hundred pages.
But the staff insisted that the canon printer also had 'starter' cartridges in the box.
I think that had I bought the Canon then I could claim misrepresentation?0 -

You keep flinging that word around - no one misrepresented anything. Canon said they provided the cartridges Epson didn't - you took that as "Well cannon do it so Epson must".
You can't get angry at Burger King because they didn't give you a Big Mac when McDonalds does it's two different companies. With two different agendas.
And also Cannon list them as a selling point. "Hey buy the XL cartridges they give you 100 more prints than the standard ones and its only 50p more!"0 -
But the staff insisted that the canon printer also had 'starter' cartridges in the box.
But as you earlier stated that it was in fact the cashier that advised you of the fact that the Epson printer only had starter cartridges, how would he have known about the Canon printer seeing as you only mentioned taking the Epson to the till?
The simple fact is that the only error made was by you. You were clearly told what the box contained and you chose to ignore this information.0 -
Actually when the cashier told me about the 'starter' cartridges I said that I was going to buy the Canon because it had basic cartridges that printed hundreds of pages. He said, 'no, the Canon also has the starter cartridges'. So I showed him the Canon box which clearly stated the model no. of the basic cartridges and how many pages it printed and against it said 'included'. The cashier said that may be the case but the Canon box contained only 'starter' cartridges. That is the reason why I did not buy the Canon - it became a split decision between the Epson and the Canon.
Now I see that as misreprsentation - in that the box claims that basic cartridges are included which print hundreds of pages but in fact the box contains 'starter' cartridges. What if the cashier did not alert the customers?0
