Don't hold your breath when the manager phones you back. I've just spent over an hour to try to just get what I have now (for free) but this is how it works. You have only three choices - pay the £5 a month from 1st August, cancel the whole thing and lose the lot or move to BT Lite so you keep what you have for free. But the catch is if you move to BT lite then the whole of your phone and broadband package gets extended (in my case by another 6 months). This means I'll be stuck with BT for another 6 months (I may not want to move when the contract ends but I'd like the choice). Worse is that it then means my contract is out of sync with the advanced line rental I pay so that again means that I will be stuck with BT. I was effectively told "like it or lump it" and when I said I wanted to complain I was told it wouldn't do any good as they wouldn't do anything about my complaint - it would just sit on my account. I complained anyway and I would strongly urge everyone affected by this to do so. Senior managers are often managed on the number of complaints recorded on the system and if the statistics suddenly go sky high then they will realise how many customers they have upset. I will move to Sky as soon as my contract expires!

READ MY POST on page 2 of this thread i think. Complain do it via Martyn Lewis Resolver service. Complain down the official channels tell them you want it logged and a written response. By ofcom rules they have to give you a final written response. Tell them you will then take it to the OMBUDSMAN . Heres the deal. EVERY SINGLE Case that is referred to the Omsbudsman service BT will have to pay £550 so their £60 increase will cost them £550 if it goes to the OMSBUDSMAN. its in their interest to settle or sort you out if not they will have to pay a fee and most likely the Omsbudsman will side with you anyway. DO NOT TAKE NO for an answer when making a complaint that is your legal right !

I can see how ambiguous all this is. I signed up to BT less than a month ago with free BT sport, 12 month contract. It was only due to googling and forums I found out that BT sport will start to charge and the 12 month fixed price contract for those services was meaningless.

I signed up knowing that, but still think it's wrong the way BT are doing this.

But as above, for footy fans this has to be paid for somehow.

I am just off the phone to BT as my contract ends in a month - was offered the £5 per month waived if I renewed - but I refused.
The £5 per month is probably because they have paid (along with sky) over the odds for football rights.

I contacted BT via twitter and have had a response saying to keep a check on their website and there will soon be an option to go to BT Lite without locking into a new 12-month contract.
  • Hello all, first post on here so be kind! I have BT broadband, phone and TV. I chose them to keep BT Sport to watch rugby. However I have now received an email telling me in order to watch football, which I don't want to, I have to pay £5 a month or renew by agreement for 18 months even though I am only 3 months in. Clearly I don't want to pay the £5 for something I would never watch. Anyone know a way to avoid this?

Looks like avoid by not watching Rugby .
As you know both Rugby and Football are on the existing old BT Sport setup .

Advert says something about BT TV £0.00 package with £35 activation fee might be worth a look .

Its really going to be how much am i willing to pay to watch the game this season/ next season bearing in mind that some WC pre matches are on Sky .
  • Like others on here I'm new to BT and have had the email today saying that I'll have to pay for BT Sport from August - 5 months into my contract. BT say the BT Sport is not part of the contract but on my joining email (and all my bills) I have a £13.50 charge discounted by £13.50 so I would say that makes it a contract! It also says, "This is to confirm your order, what you're getting and what you need to do. Please keep this email because you might need some of the information later.......

    "Your BT Sport service
    You'll be able to watch:
BT Sport 1 on BT TV channel 507

BT Sport 2 on BT TV channel 508

    ESPN on BT TV 509"

Seems pretty clear cut to me but what do I know.

from BT UK - "I understand your frustration, there is no new contract for BT Sport Lite if you just wish to have this, your existing contract will still stand".
This is part of message sent to me via their Facebook page this afternoon after I contacted them about the increase and the fact that lots of people have been told they must have a new contract for downgrading to S Lite or they would have to totally cancel to keep existing contracts.
Also sent me a link to complaints dept saying they would look into what people have been told - I've sent it and asked them to clarify.
