Suffolk_lass said:What kind of Chromebook did you get AFK? - Oh and you can multi quote by just pressing quote twice, it pops them both (all) at the bottom, ready to commentand as I don't use it for that much - will do - also got a Google Nest Mini free with it. Will leave that for another day when I can cope with how to operate it, next on list is a printer - have bought 3 through time and every one given away still in the box as could not work out how to connect - now I have more time - I will try again.bexster1975 said:Hello
thanks for tip re:badges! This is a god-awful change to the site. Sorry to hear of problems. I might be getting a chrome book myself at this rate, if apple of been ousted from MSE forums! Amazing saving re: bus pass. You can’t be much more than 2 weeks away from the big day now can you? Early March?
bexsterCan't wait for bus pass, and can see your maths haven't improved much since starting my diary bexster (lol
) late March - which is why in a bit of a panic when considering my lump sum, will it be in this tax year or next, will just need to be patient and wait and see, 6 weeks and 1 day (not that I'm counting) lol, which is why I'm off for nearly the whole month (working only 3 days).

Lol re: birthday. Is the month off to recover? When do you want the lump sum? This tax year or next? No idea how you become “ part of the furniture” I’ll take a look at my badges. Only a couple of hours work today and tomorrow, then done until Monday afternoon!!

Ha ha ha! Re: part of the furniture! I had not noticed that badge before! Apparently you get it when nobody remembers a time when you weren’t on the forum!
whilst I’m no fan of the new forum, that is a funny new badge! My mum has a chrome book she bought and has never used. I may offer to buy it off her and try my luck with that on the forums
bexster1 -
Yeah, I thought so too, appeals to my soh
That's great, if your mum has one she hasn't used, you would certainly put it to good use. Keep me updated on that one. Wonder if there are any other funny badges lurking yet to appear.
Maybe we need more time to give the new forum a chance.
Oh, tax year - well the one I don't have to pay as much.Always have 00.00 at the end of your mortgage and one day it will all be 0's :dance:MF[STRIKE] March 2030[/STRIKE] Yes that does say 2030  Mortgage Free 21.12.18 _party_Now a Part Timer from 27.10.191 -
I suspect you will need to hang around the forums for a few more years to get your purple chair. I will keep you posted on mums chrome book ( going to visit parents today). I assume least tax will be next tax year ( due to your laid back attitude to attending work, starting last autumn )

Big assumption here - your forthcoming big birthday is also your normal pension age and you start receiving your pension based on TFLS and regular monthly income. Your pension lump sum is your "tax free lump sum" - up to 25% of your fund, - and assuming you have not been secretly drawing down from your fund already (maybe that is how you paid off your mortgage in 8 years,
), the tax year is irrelevant as it is tax free unless you are exceeding the 25% threshold.
If the big birthday is before 55 you would also pay tax to repay the tax relief you received when you paid it in, plus tax on what you remove. If it is your normal pension age for the scheme or fund you are in, they should have told you what your total fund is worth and how much you can take tax free (which is normally a bit higher than the default that occupational schemes offer).
NB Badges - I have acquired the photogenic one this week, since adding a pic of my catSave £12k in 2025 #2 I am at £4863.32 out of £6000 after May (81.05%)
OS Grocery Challenge in 2025 I am at £1286.68/£3000 or 42.89% of my annual spend so far
I also Reverse Meal Plan on that thread and grow much of our own premium price fruit and veg, joining in on the Grow your own thread

"Big Birthday" would have been my "normal" retirement age when I signed up for this "scheme" many, many years ago, however although they moved the goalpost they are keeping what would have been my normal retirement age.I think, but could be wrong, bus pass age in Scotland is lower. They have told me what the total fund is worth and how much (25%) I can take tax free, and regular month income, is nothing to speak of, which is why I'm taking the total lump sum.Only found out about this "scheme" "fund 2-3 years ago, so, no have not been "secretly" withdrawing from fund already, thought about that last year but was already MF by then) so thought, what the heck, its only another year and it will all be due to me, hence going part time (cushions the blow )(reduced income) so to speak. No, I paid off my mortgage
through focus, hard work, determination and being total frugal for the years I had the mortgage. A lot of things I made "do" which is why I now want to have my cushion and be able to "treat" myself and house to the things that do need replacing. Was just looking though bank statements recently and can't actually believe just how little I left myself in the bank when o/p the mortgage, not to be recommended, but I managed.
As for tax years, well this tax year (being full time) for most of it, plus lump sum, could well take me into the higher tax bracket (which I want to avoid at all costs) the next year's tax wouldn't, another little interesting fact that I didn't know about, or to put it another way, never needed to know, is that the tax rate is actually higher in Scotland (??) for different earnings.Hope I've got that right.Liking your badge and photo - they get up to all sorts of mischief, don't they !!!Always have 00.00 at the end of your mortgage and one day it will all be 0's :dance:MF[STRIKE] March 2030[/STRIKE] Yes that does say 2030  Mortgage Free 21.12.18 _party_Now a Part Timer from 27.10.191 -

bexsterHope visit goes well.Yes, I think next years tax year would be less, so no high tax bracket.
