Meant to add we wouldn't even have a family room guaranteed and kids may have to kip on the floor as bridal party are taking the larger rooms as they need the space !

I personally wouldn't pay to stay either before or after at wedding so close to home. But that my choice, plus there is six of us and if the cost is per person then it works out expensive for us.

I am surprised no one has picked up on the comment made by OP on page 1. Due to the bridal party taking the bigger rooms, she MAY end up paying £40 for each child to sleep on the floor!!!!!! Not a chance would I pay for that nor would I allow anyone else to pay such a ridiculous amount to sleep on the floor.

Reading the rest of the comments esp the one about fil birthday BBQ I'd agree with your final decision.

I'm surprised at how much 'extra' information was left out until the BIL's reputation needed a good kicking.

The hotel can't charge for a family room and then expect them to sleep on the floor!!! What kind of a hotel is it that would even be suggested?

Sounds a bit dodgy and not in line with insurance - probably no family rooms available
Never again will the wolf get so close to my door

I think that the OP was fudging it a bit. If there were no family rooms available the hotel couldn't charge for the kids, they may turn a blind eye to them using sleeping bags on the floor but they certainly wouldn't be charging for them.

At our wedding, the hotel charged 30 pounds per z bed in a room for kiddies...! (Even if provided by someone!)

I don't drink so am always happy to drive. Last family wedding, rooms were £220 per night.

So I drove home (about 30 mins) and then drove back for breakfast with everyone.
We had pre-arranged this with the hotel (paid £10 p/head for a breakfast each)

Saved at least £180 with petrol etc and we had breakfast and mid-morning coffee with everyone else.
Main reason I did it though is I knew my toddler would not sleep properly in a hotel- by the time I had convinced her to sleep in a strange room I may as well have driven home!
Perhaps you could arrange to meet everyone in the morning?

Would you attend a meal the night before?

perhaps thats all he wants, everyone to attend the night before for a more casual catch up meal.

but you can attend that and still go home and then back for the wedding the next day. Maybe leave the teenagers at home for the night before.

And I'd probably say we'd arrive at the hotel the next day at 11ish to catch up with people for a coffee (as they all have to wait around from breakfast until getting ready time at 2ish). Is there anything to do at the hotel like a nice walk (and take proper clothes to get changed into).

Or the hotel haven't said anything of the kind.

There's a lot of 'extra information' thrown in when a thread isn't going a particular way.

I can only relay what bil said - he has hired the whole venue for the weekend as he wanted everyone to stay. If you stayed fri night you would get priority for sat night. The cost was worked out by dividing it by number of rooms and then number of guests so per person, per night. Whether venue is aware of this I don't know. We are aware that family rooms were limited because they were larger and bridal party needed to extra space so we may have to cram into a double room.

It is impossible to add every bit of detail to an op as it's impossible to know what some people deem to be relevant or not - so the conspiracy theorists are way off the mark and are adding nothing of interest to the discussion and are simply trying to sidetrack my thread.

My bil is not a bad person, neither are we - I am happy after posting my initial op that dh & I are not being unreasonable - we will be there to celebrate all day, do not plan to leave until the end and our presence will only be absent once people are in bed !
