Thank guys. I believe that registering (via the notification tray "Get Win10" app) has NOTHING to do with activation. I asked the original question because Lorian said he needed to reserve Win10 in order to do a media upgrade in Win7 (I haven't done a media upgrade in Win7 yet). You certainly don't have to register to do a media upgrade in Win8 (or Win 8.1).
The Win10 key generation (for the upgrade) is done at upgrade time. This is why you must do the upgrade BEFORE a clean install.

PS. The advantage of doing a media upgrade is that you don't need all the OS updates in Win7 or 8 or 8.1 in order to perform the upgrade. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0 -
I installed Win10 from a DVD ISO onto a Win7 PC.
You start Windows 7 and then insert the DVD and run the ISO to start the install. No MS Product Keys required.
If you boot into the DVD then you need a retail MS Product Key or a special MS key to do the load and then enter your (OEM) MS Product Key after install to get it running. Tho I haven't checked if this does in fact work.
It automaticall downloads new versions of your installed applications.
My NVIDIA display wasn't compatible so the online upgrade wouldn't work. Win10 does work OK like this but you only get the basic MS video driver. 3G graphics and other advanced features don't work so Google Earth won't run. So likely problems with other applications and games. I reverted to Win7 and will have to make do with Win10 in Virtualbox.
Nvidia have apparently said that they wont upgrade legacy drivers so there will be many older PCs running Win7 with disappointed owners.0 -

Agreed. outwith an old laptop with onboard. An upgrade>2006 is going to cost very little.0 -
PC motherboard came with NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 onboard - new in Nov 2009.
So an old design display adapter but sold for many years.
I expect the demand for compatible second hand graphic boards will shoot up0 -

I can receive messages, just unable to send.
Yes, me. Exactly the same. Test sends but emails don't.
I use this laptop for business and TBH, I don't have the time to faff around with emails not sending, I've just restored to W8. Took 10 mins and now I can carry on as normal.
I did like W10, so if there is an easy fix for this I'll be happy to go back, but ATM it's a major problem I don't need.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -

EDIT: **need somebody to test this for outlook**
Click on the search icon, search on cmd when you find the application (Command Prompt) run as administrator (i.e. right click it and click run as administrator). You will then see a rectangular black window appear with folder> then type in "sfc /scannow" (no "") and sit back and wait (takes a while to run).
When finished type in exit. Then close outlook, restart. If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.0
