So I installed Windows 10 on my Dell Optiplex 9020 desktop.
It is working great and I am loving it. It is activated.
As my Dell came with Windows 7 Professional. And I used the upgrade feature.
Now let's say I have a problem, and need to reinstall my Windows 10.
How do I do it in future ?
I am talking about clean install. As it will then ask me the key.
I did not put key during upgrade process, and windows 10 activated with no problem.
Thanks0 -

I use this laptop for business and TBH, I don't have the time to faff around with emails not sending, I've just restored to W8. Took 10 mins and now I can carry on as normal.
I did like W10, so if there is an easy fix for this I'll be happy to go back, but ATM it's a major problem I don't need.
Got it on one of my machines. don't really use it for productive work so only noticed testing.
I'm trying this right nowSo saw this on another WindowsCentral thread.
Click on the search icon, search on cmd when you find the application (Command Prompt) run as administrator (i.e. right click it and click run as administrator). You will then see a rectangular black window appear with folder> then type in sfc/scannow and sit back and wait (takes a while to run).
When finished type in exit. Then close outlook, restart and problem solve. Seems to have solved the problem for a number of people on the other thread too.0 -

You can use the iso file to do both the upgrade and the clean install. I did two test last night.
First Test on HP Desktop:
1. Ran the Windows 10 update on a Windows 8.1 Pro Machine that was up to date with Windows Updates and Windows 10 was activated.
2. Immediately did a clean install of Windows 10.
3. During the clean install it asked for a Product Activation Key twice. Both times I clicked skip. Windows 10 Pro was activated when the install completed.
Second Test on Dell Desktop:
1. Did a clean install of Windows 8 Pro and activated it.
2. I did no Windows Updates after install.
3. Ran the Windows 10 update and Windows 10 was activated
4. Immediately did a clean install of Windows 10.
5. During the clean install it asked for a product Activation key twice. Both times I clicked skip. Windows 10 Pro was activated when the install completed.
Being asked for Activation Keys when they were not needed was a little confusing but the clean install method MS promised does work.
What if something changes with your hardware?
If it’s something major like a motherboard replacement, its hardware ID will no longer be the same. If this was done by your PC maker or an authorized repair center, no worries: they can inject an OEM key and make sure the system remains activated and will be good going forward (because the new ID is now registered with the store). If you do this yourself, you will need to phone activate.
In other words, everything works exactly as expected. So we can actually relax now. It looks like Microsoft has done the right thing, they will be documenting this information on the Windows web site soon.0 -
Thanks for the information.
I shall make an iso DVD for bad times then.0 -
One machine, my main desktop will not download the Windows 10 update.
All I get is several "Update Failed" messages with a reason code of "80240020"
Google gives a pointer to work arounds but having to delete the contents of Windows Folders or hacking the registry does nothing to inspire my confidence in the final product.

Why do people not pull out the key once it has updated and activated? Then you can just use that key for future installs?
Just use something like produkey to see the key.
I am presuming that as a listed and activated key this will work fine for any future installs.
Edit: I will try this when i have time to do a clean install, just not sure when I will get time to do the install.“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0 -
Had 10 installed on a desktop, it had problems with something at start up, screen flashed for about a minute, then once on the desktop screen, no window would stay open for more than 10 seconds; edge, settings, properties etc. Didn't even get to any more complex problems some are having.
Needless to say, I have re-installed Windows 7 and will be sticking with it for the next 11 months.0 -

Yes, Outlook.
Thanks, I'll install W10 next weekend, and give that a go.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0
