Are you saying that there is no longer a difference between Retail and OEM installation media?
I don't know regarding Win 8/8.1, but there was with Win 7.
I have upgraded a HP OEM Win 7 Pro Installation and a Green-box retail Win7 Pro from the same media Win 10 today just fine, both activated.
It does appear you need to reserve your free upgrade in Win 7 before doing an upgrade from media, otherwise you are asked for a key.
You can create your media with x32 and x64 installations on the same media, so just need one for pro, and one for home, to cover all options. if using single sided DVDs you are going to need to make 4.0 -
Has anyone had any issues sending emails? I am currently unable to send any emails although when testing send and receive in account settings everything appears fine.
I can receive messages, just unable to send.0 -

It does appear you need to reserve your free upgrade in Win 7 before doing an upgrade from media, otherwise you are asked for a key.
So for the initial upgrade you should run setup.exe from within the earlier version of Windows. Once this is upgraded and (importantly) activated, then you can boot from the media and clean-install if you so wish.
That's how I understand it, anyway.0 -
ok , I can understand the upgrade path, however how does the media on a pendrive or dvd know your old win ser number when you do a clean install ?
a hell of a lot of computers come with windows pre installed and no serial number is visible on the machine or paperwork0 -

The Upgrade reads the previous activated operating system, and if it looks good, it should activate Windows 10.
This activation process stores details of your hardware on a server somewhere, so that if you clean install on the same hardware later, it phones home to the server, recognises the hardware and activates automatically.
I think, anyway...0 -

If you registered for the upgrade first it took the serial number of your Motherboard and your win7/8/8.1 key.
It logged them with Microsoft which generated a win10 key.
When you install from the DVD/USB stick it uses a temp 30 key. It then authenticates your computer with Microsoft's servers using the motherboard serial and grabs the correct win10 key.Laters
