Yes it is and no there's not...:)

Thank you for giving me the confidence to update using this method. The Windows Update approach didn't work for me. All appears to be working well with a few oddities to address.
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".
  • Well everything seems to be fine................except when viewing MSE website I keep getting the following "Hmm, we can’t reach this page." message. It was initially on both chrome and edge but I have changed proxy settings on chrome and appeared to have solved it but can't find how to change proxy settings on edge. Can anyone help?

It is a problem with MSE, not the Windows 10 update. The website has been playing up for a few days and especially today.

I have an issue with Windows 10 in that it's made my photos folders read only. I'm signed in as an administrator and it goes through the motions of converting the folders to read/write but it doesn't do it. As soon as it's finished supposedly changing them I check again and they're all read only.

Any idea how I can fix this?

Edit: I found the answer thanks to Google:

    To all of you who have the "Read only"-problem;

I've had the same kind of issue concerning a few random files in Win7. I didn't have any acces at all, and the workaround back then was hard to find, but simple to apply.

When you right-click the "main-folder" that you only have "read"-rights on, and enter properties, there is a security-tab, where there should be listed a few whitelisted-accessors. Those can be, but are not limited to; Users, System, Administator, etc...

Now, there should be a button just below the list, named "Edit" or "Manage" (translating this from a Danish operating-system...), and if you press that, you're given the option of adding or removing "accessors" and rights/allowances to them. Go ahead and press the "Add" button. Now, a new window will open with 3 slots - 2 of which should already be filled. The last box should be empty, and here you should now write "EVERYONE" or "ALL" (again, translation from Danish...). Capital letters, may or may not be important. For me, it capitalised everything automatically.

Press the OK button, and select the "accessor" you've just created. Below the list, there should be 2 collums of squares with/without checkmarks. In the "Allow" collum, you should check all boxes, and in the "Deny" collum, all boxes should be un-checked. Duh.. :)

I have no idea if this works in Windows 10, as i've not yet had the pleasure of udgrading my own system, but it just might be the solution you're looking for. It's worth a try, right? :)

I updated 5 different drivers in all, had to check each one!

    Realtek High Definition Audio
    Realtek PCle FE Family Controller
    Broadcom WiFi Adapter
    Intel HD Graphics Family
    Microphone Realtek High Definition Audio

BUT... The problem has returned. Came to shut down last night, and once again laptop would not fully shut down (but yet it did earlier in the day, hence my post!)

I googled the problem and found people talking about it back in April 2014, those people testing Windows 10 so I really cannot understand why it has not been fixed.

Again overnight my battery was drained because laptop did not fully shut down. Perhaps I should remove the battery before shut down...

What is the logic behind MS - stopping DVD playback in Win 10 ?
What are my options for playing DVD's - assuming that the issue is not drivers ?

If you upgraded from a pc with Media Center, then I think you have this option:
    http://www.neowin.net/news/microsoft-rolls-out-windows-dvd-player-for-windows-10-users-who-used-to-have-media-center
Note that there's a lot of small print- for instance if you clean-install Windows 10, the rest of Windows 10 will work but this DVD player will still work. Microsoft have provided it, but it seems very grudgingly.

To be honest I'd stick with VLC Player as suggested.
