Seriously? Did they ask permission? Its a simple update via windows update.
I assume you are happy for them to install the updates you have allowed without checking?

As to how to remove it. Its in the thread and as simple as a few clicks on Google.
I didnt ask your permission but did the work for you.

    Could be considered adware...

I, however, installed the update manually on my Windows 7 client, just to see if it was potentially compatible with the upcoming update. I won't be upgrading (my Windows 7 clients) any time soon.

I have seen if you upgrade you cannot go back to what you had. This is my concern

Couldn't you just do a factory reinstall?

I'd reserve it worst comes to the worst you can always ignore and cancel the download when it's released.

Are you sure you can cancel the upgrade?

My Win 8 laptop upgraded itself, to 8.1

What I would like to know for sure is...

    1) If you upgrade, does your Windows 7 Pro retail key now become non-valid, and you can't go back? (Not seen the answer to this yet)

    2) Can you do a clean install after the year is out, without resorting to saved images/recovery partition? (It appears that you have to pay for the full version - unless the MS rep is wrong).

    3) I have the full versions of Office 2010/2013 - are these compatible? (It appears that at least 2010 does not work, not sure about 2013)

The answers above have been given by MS reps, so may or may not be correct.

So it can be very costly to get this free upgrade.

Yes you will have to pay for the upgrade after 12 months but that's not your main question. You will be able to clean install after you upgrade -or get your Win10 key- whichever comes first.

Nothing stated for sure (as far as I can see) but I doubt it. You can "try-before-you-buy" with a 10 Preview build. Or take an image of your Win7Pro partition before you upgrade and if you don't like Win10 ring MS up to deactivate your Win10 key (and reinstate your Win7 key if it has been de-activated; why not?)

That neowin article still does not answer that question

"Once you upgrade W10 w/ the free upgrade offer you will able to clean reinstall Windows 10 on same device any time"

That's OEM surely, but what about retail keys? My PC is soon to be changed, so that will not do.

About the Win 7 becoming invalid, MS can mark the original key invalid, thereby you are unable to activate.
I know what you said there, but would they actually reinstate it?

Is this upgrade worth the hassle? I'm reading a lot about how and what to do but nothing on if anyone wishes they really hadn't. I am imagining many other people had good experiences but didn't post than those who have posted on here or elsewhere and mentioning all the niggles and hiccups they've experienced but even so, no one has said weather they wish they hadn't bothered or not.

I currently have Winds 8.1 on a desktop. Am thinking 'if it aint broke...' but am wondering if the difference is that much- is there very much to see as different or is it all hidden under-the-bonnet type changes?
