This answers the question how MS earns money from the "free" upgrade.
I'd wait and see with regards to Office 2007 - although I think its official out-of-support date is 2017 regardless of whether or not Windows 10 supports it, so it has less than 3 years' life in any case.0 -
Currently running windows 7 If I upgrade to windows 10 will i still be able to use my printers and other devices . also will office 2007 still work ok
With respect I'm not sure what you were hoping to find out.
Printer drivers are written by Printer makers, Microsoft will not know what HP/Xerox/Epson etc may do. The printer makers are the ones who you need to blame as to making you buy a new printer, they choose not to write new drivers (and HP are particularly bad here in my experience)
Microsoft do a good job trying to support older hardware but cannot support everything.
Similarly with software Office 2007, it came out 8 years ago, it finished mainstream support back in 2012 which means the only support now is security patches and that finishes in April 2017.
Office 2010 goes into security patch upgrades only support mode in October of this year too.
Windows 7 has already hit the end of mainstream support, so while there will be security patches till 2020 that's all it will get.
Very few devices now will reach 5 years old without support dropping, Phones usually become unsupported after 2 or 3 years, TV's often become uneconomic to fix after 2 or 3 years, and software support for them is non existent.
Apple do the same, iPads have 3 to 4 year software support before they cease being update able. Apple OS tends (as Apple don't publish timelines) to be supported for three versions, so about three years, and every time an new update is released some systems fall out of support.
I can understand you may not want to upgrade as the are costs, thats your choice, no-one being forced to upgrade Windows 10, and even if you don't wish to pay these costs now, when you eventually replace your computer you may have to pay them then.0 -
AFAIK, they're not making big changes to how drivers work in 10, so the general advice would be that anything that works in 8 (and I think you can sometimes get Windows 2000 drivers to work here!) it'll work in 10.
Some security stuff along the way has broken things, and some can be worked around.
I see no reason why Office 2007 should work in 8 (it DOES BTW) but not 10.
Of course, if anyone wants to find out, they could try installing it onto the Beta right now...0 -
I have Office 2007 working in W10 preview latest update.....If that helps anyone....Drinking Rum before 10am makes you

I posted this earlier without much explanation.. This is either a very ill informed Microsoft tech support person or someone who does not want to answer questions. In my experience manufacturers dont generally issue new drivers for older printers. Also although office 2007 and 2010 may be getting old, newer versions are not guaranteed to be an improvement. So add the cost of upgrading unwanted software into this "feebie". There's a throwaway line at the end where he/she promises to fix anything that goes wrong. A comment well outside if this persons pay grade.
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Answer Desk. My name is Daisyre G. What can I help you with today?
Hi there. How are you today?

Hi. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. There is a big possibility that your drivers may not work properly.
Since Windows will be updated, the drivers must be updated too.
Office 2007 is only compatible with Wind 8
It is not compatible with Windows 10.
In this case you have to upgrade to a newer version of Office too.
By the way, may I have your name please for me to address you properly?
You:

FrankThis happenned to me before when I upgraded from XP to W. So it is up to the manufacturers of printers to update the drivers
:
20:36:21
Thanks Frank. That is absolutely correct Frank.
If there is a new launch of Windows, manufacturer's are also doing their best to update drivers to avoid compatibility issues.
You:
20:37:31
What about office 2010?
:
20:39:32
As of this moment as I check on our source here. Office 2010 is not included.
Office 2010 is compatible with Windows 8.1 so far.
You:

Sorry, I meant I have Office 2010 on my laptop. can I use it if I upgrade the laptop to w10. I also currently use windows live mail. will this still be used with W10
:
20:43:00
I see. Unfortunately we don't have official information about all compatibilities of Windows 10 yet.
Since it's official launch will be on October.
On July the Windows 10 our customers can use is a trial version.
I hope do Office 2010 will work with Windows 10.
So as what I am sure of, Office 2013 and Office 2365 are compatible with Windows 10.
So as Office 2016 which will be launch next year too.
You:
20:45:41
The July version is a full version NOT A TRIAL
So if i accept the upgrade i will lose office 2007 and possibly office 2010?
:
20:46:59
It's partly a full and trial version since we will on the process fixing any possible issues it encounter.
That I can not give exact answer Frank, as I've mentioned earlier we don't have official compatibility information for Windows 10 yet.
But I do hope these versions of Office will work properly with Windows 10.
But we will make sure everything will be great for our customers.
Is there anything else I can help you with Frank?
You:
20:50:14
You say quite specifically on page 1 that it is a full version - not a trial.
ok I cant afford to lose office or buy new printers if that is the cost of this free upgrade. Glad I checked with you first
:
20:51:24
I understand Frank. That is the free upgrade to Windows 10.
But it will officially launch on October.
You don't have to worry about that Frank, since we address these issues immediately and fix all issues on computer at your satisfaction.
Is there anything else I can help you with Frank?
You:
20:54:16
No . Thanks for the info. Bye now

Never mind Office 2007, I want to know whether Office 2002 will work with W10. It works fine in W7. And then there's Quicken 98.......!0

Officially that wasn't compatible with Windows 8, let alone 10, so the official view will be that it isn't compatible with 10.
In practice I think many users used Office 2003 with Windows 8 with no problems so it may work fine with 10 too, although Office 2003 is of course out of support.0 -
Have you got a source for this information? I know you can install the BETA version from an ISO, but I can't find anywhere that says you can install the RETAIL version from an ISO.
Which I'm a bit miffed about, because I've got 2 PCs and 5 virtual machines which are all eligible for the upgrade, and I don't want to download an automatic update of 3 GB 7 times (total 21 GB).
Similar situation here. I started enabling the update on each of our computers/laptops at home, but not sure it's a good idea. Think I might cancel the automatic update so I can download a ISO and update each computer one at a time.0 -
Jivesinger wrote: »Do you mean Office 2003?
Actually, the installation discs say Office XP although each application reports, for example, Word 2002, Excel 2002 etc.0 -
