The license converts to Windows 10 as soon as you upgrade. I've updated many PC's only to then completely wipe and clean install and they have all activated.
Do you mean you have done a clean install back to Win 7 and it has activated and did you reinstall from recovery drive or go bak to Win 7 section?0 -
It is also on Microsofts web siteAre you saying that Microsoft will refuse to convert the (upgraded) Windows 10 licence back to a Windows 7 one?
However I think it's very unlikely that Microsoft will block users from uninstalling Windows 10 and going back to Windows 7. I think the 30 days just refers to the time before they delete the old files.
No doubt some people will have problems going back after 30 days, because some people have problems going back within the 30 days, but I'd be very surprised if Microsoft turn anything off for Windows 7/8.x activation.
I imagine someone will confirm it soon enough...0 -

if I want to think I am using a tablet or mobile phone I can revert back to tiles , however I am not using a tablet/phone , so a conventional menu system works better for me

I think the licence 'converts' in the sense that you still only have one licence. You can't use that Windows 7 licence on another machine or disk when the Windows 10 licence derived from it is still installed.

I asked this very question of MS
"The Windows 7 license is now the basis for the free Windows 10 upgrade.
While you run the Windows 10 upgrade, you can NOT re-use the Windows 7 license.
If you want to free up the Windows 7 license, you can either stop using Windows 10 or upgrade to a paid retail version of Windows 10.. $99 for Home, $199 for Pro, more if you buy from your local store..
Incidentally, the Upgrade rules have ALWAYS been this way."
So - yes, it appears to be Reusable (as long as you don't try to use both at the same time !!!0 -

Oh, that is good news! Other than the privacy concerns and the fact the OS doesn't work without Classic Shell (joke), that's the main issue that was putting me off upgrading.0 -

Some of us have been trying to determine whether a Retail Licence will remain 'Retail' after upgrading to Win 10.
I recently posted these 2 links from HUKD,

I've now seen this link,

I think that means 2 - 1 against what Microsoft are saying?Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Also it suggests you should use software to lookup the new Windows 10 product key, which is pointless when everyone has the same key for a given edition.
So I wouldn't trust what it says about Retail keys either.0 -
Jivesinger wrote: »I think that article is very wrong - it says Windows 10 stores the Windows 10 Key in the firmware on UEFI machines, but everything I've seen from people who I trust more is that the key is stored in the Microsoft servers, not locally on the machine.

good point about the uefi bios
if you open a command prompt and type in slmgr /xpr a box appears to say that the MACHINE is registered .
If you do a clean install without an internet connection , the machine is not registered , until your bios code is sent to MS
if you drag a drive from a identical machine , the thing stays unregistered
I am fortunate I have an ISO of win 8 that has had the media centre incorporated , and no ser no is needed to make it legal on multiple machines , then upgrade to 10 , then wipe and do a clean install , all fully registered.
I have been having costomers come to me , that had legal copies of 7/8 and misread the install (for win 10) instructions and did a wipe out and clean install , only to find they are getting "bug" messages now.
a few have changed there cases , lost there discs or lost there paperwork , If I remember them (genuine) then I will help them0 -

I get:
The machine is permanently activated0
