Is there a way to turn off the spying software after you have upgraded to Win 10?

yes!! go to "all settings" (box at bottom right) , start with security , then continue going thru the settings and turn off anything that worries you

OR as you are installing it , do not accept default setting , go thru them and turn off any you do not like

Is it possible for someone who has monitored all 65 pages of this thread to summarise whether upgrade from 7 to 10 is a good idea and what if any problems it might cause?
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.
  • win 10 seems stable , has a smaller footprint than earlier versions , but care needs to be done when thinking of upgrading

1: is your system suitable? , are all the drivers needed available from the MFG website?

2: are your external devices usable (printer/scanner/camera)

as a win 7 user you might not be happy with the start menu , easily sorted ,

try it and revert back if you are not happy

It's still a work in progress, give it six months or so and it will be in better shape. If you want to be an early adopter then be prepared for bumps and have the knowledge to work around or fix them.

Can some one please tell a novice in simple terms if I can reinstall windows 10 if I do a factory reset on my laptop?.

Since installing Windows 10 my laptop just isn't running as it should, it was OK before the download. (laptop is only 6 months old ) Now when I plug in my charger lead my screen turns off, the brightness resets to almost nothing. There's a few other little blinking things that need sorting as well, I could put up with those if the other stuff was ok,

So I thought if I did a complete reset then reinstall W10 this might solve my problems.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Chris

  • as your machine has now been registered as a legal owner of a win 10 licence , you can now go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and download a copy of win 10 and "burn" it to a DVD or pendrive and do a clean install.

check that your copy of win 10 has been registered , then reboot with the dvd/pendrive , go to advanced setup , remove(delete) all the partitions and create a new one , and continue , when asked for a ser No , skip this

I think that article is very wrong - it says Windows 10 stores the Windows 10 Key in the firmware on UEFI machines, but everything I've seen from people who I trust more is that the key is stored in the Microsoft servers, not locally on the machine.

Also it suggests you should use software to lookup the new Windows 10 product key, which is pointless when everyone has the same key for a given edition.

So I wouldn't trust what it says about Retail keys either.

Hence the ? at the end of my post.:)

Any comment about the expertreviews link?

    I dunno, to be honest.

I think I have some understanding of how the software side works when upgrading (which is why I think that earlier article wasn't written by anyone with any inside info from Microsoft), but I don't know so much about the legalities and software licensing.

I'm pretty sure that if you had a Retail 8.1 licence, upgraded to 10, and then wanted to transfer it, the automatic activation process wouldn't want to allow that automatically.

But as to the question on whether you could ring up Microsoft and activate over the phone in that situation - I really don't know. It may come down to whether you could persuade a human at the other end to activate for you, so I also suspect people will get differing answers in the same situation.

And people wonder why piracy exists with stunts like this. Just don't use your retail licence ;)

Alternatively I can still do what the heck I like with Linux :D

So, once you install Windows 10 on a computer it's non-transferable, even if your computer breaks and you have to replace it, you'll need to buy a new license.

I think I've just decided not to upgrade any Windows 7 systems. (I'll probably still do the Windows 8 ones, as that's a throw-away anyway.)
