  • Are you taking part in the insider builds?

Yep. I work in IT :(

IIRC, started using Insider builds from 10.0.9926 back in January.

I click "restart" and the Dell N5050 laptop shuts down completely and then reboots,I get the Dell logo and the F2,F12 options and then it goes to win10`s four little light blue windows logo with the little white dots spinning just below for about 20 seconds and then just a black screen.

The only way out of this is to press the power button to shut down completely.then press the power button again for a normal start up from scratch.
I remember when Windows 8 came out, some Dells which came with Windows 7 would have a 'Black Screen' when upgraded to Windows 8. I've no idea if this is the same sort of thing which you're seeing. I think Windows 8 and Windows 10 are pretty similar in terms of drivers etc. so it might be the same.

The cure was a BIOS update. See the original story here - you'll note it includes the Inspiron N5050 (although there may be later BIOS updates available than those linked to here).

One reason I know this is, is that I'm currently typing this on an Inspiron N5050, running Windows 10. ;)

It seems to be running Windows 10 for me with no problems I've noticed (not that I've used it a lot yet since upgrading).

If I revert back to Win7 within the month do I get back exactly what I had before or does microsoft delete any of it?
  • and for people using the gigabite ga-h81m-ds2v motherboard , they have release a bios update that actually allows win 10 to run

does not load using there q bios feature , you have to load win 8 , download there app and then point it to the expanded zip file , latest bios is f5

I've done the upgrade/roll back process 3 times. Nothing was deleted when doing so ... the Windows 7 installation was exactly the same each time.

(I'm now at Windows 10 again and likely staying there).

    Windows 8 certainly wasn't.
Windows 10 might be if Windows is essential to you. IME it's a fraction slower booting up than Windows 7, you lose Windows Media Center, but at least you have "Back up and Restore (Windows 7)" as an alternative to File History.
Of course you can use 3rd party products, but you might as well then go with another OS...
