You don't need to spend anything on the operating system. You can ignore the other helpful posts for now..

To be fair the OP had Vista, Someone appears to have installed a non genuine copy of 7.

If the OP has the Win 7 COA and key they can upgrade, but otherwise there is no free legal upgrade form Vista to any Windows OS, Yes you can install a copy with a pirates or stolen key, but that does not make it legal.

To be fair, your knowledge on this subject is fairly limited. There is no need for a 'pirates' or stolen key and you won't find a single person on the forum telling that I have ever suggested that they should use a 'pirates' or stolen key.
So kindly wind your neck in. You aren't being of any use with your pontifications and flawed advice.
They is clearly some things that you don't understand. even though you might think that you know it all.

I was naive and just bloomin stupid...it just never crossed my mind that a free upgrade had to be criminal. Seems so obvious now. And no, of course there is no win7 product key...I didn't know to ask for it...I do now!

I do understand that there are various ways of getting out of this predicament, but it's important to me that it is absolutely legal. Even though I understand that it will cost me.

My conscience isn't pricking me enough to rush into buying something full price, though...:rotfl:

Do you have anything on the current hard drive that you wish to save? If so, you should do so.

I'll do that anyway, regardless of how this moves forward, I think. It's good advice I should be following MUCH more regularly.

Wrong and wrong again. Don't be misled because some don't know their onions.
I don't want to keep banging on about it and you are just wasting your time listening to misguided conjecture.

You have repeatedly posted to people who have suffered from being sold or installed a key that appears invalid that you can "fix" the licencing, your words not mine.

It reads that you are offering to resolve the issue by breaking the licence model. if that's not the case my apologies, but I can only go on what you previously written and what the OP has said.

Indeed. I can remedy the issue without 'breaking the licence model'.
So illustrating ignorance by posting scaremongering conjecture about 'pirates' and 'stolen keys' is unhelpful at best.
Even worse, you quite quite rudely and stupidly, in my opinion, decided to hijack my troubleshooting with LB..
It wasn't you who determined the model of the laptop and it wasn't you who determined that the firmware should be updated etc.
So why were you sticking your nose in to a question that was addressed to me by LB in post #1115?
It is because you thought that you had the same knowledge as I and therefore you could hijack the 'thread' of troubleshooting that I had created with them ?
I'm sure that you thought that you were being helpful, but in the future, stick to your own line of troubleshooting.

Lots of food for thought here, thank you.

I won't jump into replacing the W7, then, but will have a good think about the options you've given.

My laptop is probably about 8 years old when I think about it, so I guess I've had my money's worth really. I get attached to the familiar and what serves me well :rotfl:

Much appreciate all your help, all you lovely Folks! I'll stop hijacking the thread now.

So let me get this right.... gjchester has talked you into staying with a hacked copy of Windows 7, as now you will not replace it nor can you successfully upgrade to Windows 10.

The licensing issues are extremely complex and it would be a very brave, or foolish person, who claims to understand the present predicament of the op who is clearly confused and not extremely competent in this area. Microsoft have on numerous occasions incorrectly informed users (through their automatons, of course) that they have invalid copies, when in fact this turns out not to be the case. It is right that we warn the op not to go out and purchase new software before it can be established that her current software is valid or otherwise.

Not necessarily, however, they are all options to be considered.

I am extremely grateful for all the options being offered to me, and I need to think about (indeed I am thinking about) what is right for me not just to move past this short term issue, but also for the longer term.

The poster who has said I'm not competent is correct in this - For a moment, I was offended , but then realised it's the truth :rotfl:.

I can use technology but have no real interest in how it works, and really unless you have an interest, why would you know about this kind of thing? Why would you want to know? Even "SSD" is over my head at the mo, but that does not mean I cannot learn.

Having been well and truly conned on the w7 counterfeit, I am being ultra cautious now, I know I am. I need to think through all the options available and as I say, I am grateful to have had all the different opinions.

I am 100% convinced it is a counterfeit version. Mea culpa for not being more on the ball at the time.
