So...you have a few options.
1. You can go back to Genuine Vista and then upgrade to Genuine Windows 10.
2. You can update the laptop by running the latest version of the Motherboard firmware, then to install a clean copy of Genuine Windows 7
3. Leading on from 2.; you can stay with Windows 7 (will likely run better with the clean install) which will still be supported until 2020 or upgrade to Windows 10 for free before July 2016.
Think about it and let me know. No financial cost attached to any of the options.
Oo, I'm :T with joy that there are options
But to start with no 2...where do I get a Motherboard Firmware latest version, and I don't know where is best to get a clean copy of w7.
I really don't mind if I have to spend some money to resolve this if I need to, but obviously prefer not to. For me, I need to be legal, and have a laptop that doesn't shout at me every few seconds that I am harbouring illegal software .
And as an aside it's a bloomin cheek that the fiasco of Vista doesn't warrant a free upgrade of everything, frankly .

My Windows 10 on a laptop has broke - updates don't work.
I found the error I'm getting on a few sites, and three of the four fixes given haven't worked; I'll try the fourth at some point.0 -

You need to go to HP Search on that product code of the device name, and look what they have.

You will need to download and install the one under BIOS, all the others are for the operating system.LavenderBees wrote: »I really don't mind if I have to spend some money to resolve this if I need to, but obviously prefer not to. You could try and take it back to who ever did the upgrade, but I suspect that may be a difficulty process.
Given that Windows 7 has been out a while getting Windows 7 may be difficult, you need to buy to a retail or upgrade copy to stay legit, not a OEM version.
I'd strongly suggest you use a "proper store" not Ebay or an amazon seller. You need a retail or UPGRADE version, there are very limited cases where an OEM licence possibly can be transferred legitimately but that has never been tested in UK law. If you buy a OEM that is later deemed invalid and later on turned off by Microsoft then you'll be back in this same position
Expect to pay around £70 upwards, even for a used copy. Microsoft usually reclaim all copies of the older Operating system when they release the new one.LavenderBees wrote: »And as an aside it's a bloomin cheek that the fiasco of Vista doesn't warrant a free upgrade of everything, frankly .
You may also want to consider that if you have to pay out £70 for the OS and still have an old laptop would you be better buying a new PC?
Dell's outlet for busness will sell you a new Win 7 laptop for £300 to £400 depending on stock. Businesses tend to still want and order Win 7 so theres more choice that way. There also a lot of box shifters (ebuyer, Misco and so on that may have win 7 stock to shift too.
Its not money saving now, but may save longer term, although your system may solder on for another 5 years so its all a bit of a gamble...0 -

You don't need to spend anything on the operating system. You can ignore the other helpful posts for now.
Do you have anything on the current hard drive that you wish to save? If so, you should do so.
A better place for your money would be on an SSD drive. £40 and upwards. Will improve performance and allow you to install your new OS without fear of losing any data stored on the current hard drive.
Have you anything on the current hard drive that you wish to save?
Once that is complete, I'll put a guide together for you. It's relatively simple, but will likely take an afternoon to do all of the updating.0 -

To be fair Vista came out 8 years ago, and was superseded by Windows 7 back in 2009. It may not seem it but you've problaby had the laptop for at least 5 or 6 years.

Lots of food for thought here, thank you.
I won't jump into replacing the W7, then, but will have a good think about the options you've given.
My laptop is probably about 8 years old when I think about it, so I guess I've had my money's worth really. I get attached to the familiar and what serves me well :rotfl:
Much appreciate all your help, all you lovely Folks! I'll stop hijacking the thread now.
