Prepaid Travel Cards guide

  • I was daft enough to take out a Post Office travel card and to depend upon it while travelling.

Unfortunately the PO website has been down for 2 and a half days now and I can't top it up and am running out of cash. I've spoken to the post office, they tried to do a phone transaction but that didn't work either. They don't know when it'll be back up (they say they're working on it but I suspect their techies are on a bank holiday).

I can't be the only person who's been left high and dry by this. Does anyone know how to maybe get in touch with other victims and to whom I should make a very strong complaint?
  • Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could help me, I am going travelling around SE Asia, Australia and NZ and Im trying to find the best prepaid card to take. A few months ago MSE recommended a Caxton Fx card, however after reading reviews I'm not too sure that this is the best prepaid card on offer.

Does anyone know if the Revolut card would be suitable to use for these places, in which I will be using ATM's and in store transactions? (I will also take my bank card as a spare and for use of deposits after reading prepaid cards cannot be used for this) Or does anyone know of any other prepaid cards which would be ok to use?

    Thanks,

    Hannah

    Hi Revolut Official.

As new retirees we are planning a trip to Europe in our motorhome and your card seems ideal - apart from one thing - petrol stations!

We would be loading all our spending money onto this card (travel until half way through the money then start on our way back). We would have hoped to use the card for filling up the motorhome throughout our travels but if this issue has not been resolved then we will have to think again.

    Hope you can help.

Get a SAGA Platinum or a Halifax Clarity credit card for petrol stations.. Don't expect a Prepaid card to work for these things. You can come unstuck in a very bad way.
Use the Revolut where you can and one of the credit cards indicated for deposits, automated petrol stations, tolls etc.

Revolut is fine for this, though have a decent backup card to hand.

Are there any pre paid cards which don't have a monthly fee if you don't use them for 12 months? Currently have a Thomas Cook cash passport; but trying to see if there's a better deal (exchange rate and no monthly fee after 12 months if you don't use them) for me. Don't think my income is high enough for the Halifax clarity credit card, which I remember a friend telling me has a decent rate and the interest on it is fairly small.

    Should add just for Euros.

Thank you for your reply, I shall apply for a Revolut card. I am thinking of taking my usual Halifax debit card as my backup and to use for deposits, however would you recommend taking a back up prepaid card as well such as a Caxton Fx?

Since you bank with the Halifax, ask them for a Halifax Clarity credit card. That will be the best backup solution.
  • Hello,
I'm off to Australia for a month in Dec and am a bit confused by all the card options available, any advice ? Am I best to make a few large(ish) cash withdrawals or just pay by card ?

    Cheers, Andy

    Hi
I am travelling to Turkey in sept and thought I would give the Revolut card a try.
I have down loaded the app, no problems and was also credited with 5.00 once I put 10.00 on it.
I have a few questions for the rep though that I need answering before I go.

Will I just be able to use the card straight away or will I have to contact you in regards to activating the magnetic strip first?? ( why did other posters have to do this?)

Second question will I be able to use the card in turkey to withdraw Turkish lira from there ATM's?

and finally are there any charges associated with the card for example transaction fees of any sort?
    Many thanks

    Hi Paulwellerfan,

We have changed it so that the magnetic strip will automatically be activated.

You can check what currencies we support and their current rates here: https://revolut.com/savings. We do support the Turkish Lire. You will be able to withdraw money at ATMs in Turkey and use the card there.

The Revolut app and multi-currency card are completely free. Revolut offers the very best exchange rate available and applies no charges or fees. We guarantee this for the first 12 months of being a Revolut customer.

    Hi Magnolia,

It is possible for you to pay at petrol stations, it should work at the till. But you cannot do pre-authorisation transactions at petrol stations.

    Hi Hannah1234,

You can check what currencies we support and their current rates here: https://revolut.com/savings. I suspect we will support all the countries you will be visiting. We do support AUD and NZD.

Just back from a week in Northern Italy where the only access to currency was through our new Revolut account.

As my husband summed up " it does exactly what it says on the tin"

Worked a treat for us and gave us an easyway to top up our account and access our currency quickly.

We only used it to make cash withdrawals not to make purchases but it was so easy, just popping it into any ATM we happened to be passing. Although the ATMs abroad couldn't given us a balance on the account we found that within minutes of making a cash withdrawal we had a text from Revolut to confirm the withdrawal and to clarify remaining funds.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommended or use the Revolut card in the future. Simplicity for your holiday.
