These days "formally" just means that you have a definite agreement to marry, rather than a vague intention to get married "one day maybe".Torry_Quine wrote: »There is no such thing as being engaged formally though, it is an agreement between two people.0

Have you ever heard of the Rites of Betrothal?
No I haven't and looking it up seems to be a Catholic thing although of course you are engaged with or without it,Lost my soulmate so life is empty.
I can bear pain myself, he said softly, but I couldna bear yours. That would take more strength than I have -

Of course there is, it's when someone proposes or a couple agree to decide to start planning a wedding.
I've never known anyone to say they're engaged without a ring on their finger/ their fiances.0

An engagement ring isn't necessary to be engaged and in my case I was engaged before the ring was bought.Lost my soulmate so life is empty.

You don't need a ring to be engaged. What if someone (like me) doesn't like jewellery?0

I almost wrote physical or metaphorical but I didn't think anyone would be that picky.
 Oh wait, this is MSE.
But of course, in normal world I live in, no one would announce their engagement without a ring, whether they intended to wear it or not. The idea of getting engaged without a ring is strange, though of course on MSE it will be so normal.0

I was waiting for somebody to say that.0

I don't know what world you live in?! :rotfl: Admittedly, most people do have a ring (I do myself, but tbh I wasn't particularly bothered) but of course people can announce their engagement without a ring, it isn't a necessitity, and it isn't strange either.
I sometimes think people are more concerned with a bit of bling than the actual thought of getting married.0

I'll let you know when someone does it then. You have one so not sure why you were deliberately disagreeing with me. But I meant it as the phrase.
I do agree with the last bit though, but a ring doesn't have to be expensive, it's symbolic.0
