If you had PPI, it will show on the monthly statements, if it is not there, you did not pay it.0 -
If you don't think it's worthwhile to have a go at PPI, I would have agreed. However, I had a go and you won't believe this but I have received a total of £24,000 in 2015. It's like a small lottery win! Thanks MSE!0

I have just received £1050 back from NRAM for a loan I took out in 2000. I had no paperwork, statements or account number and the only details I gave them were the addresses I was living at when I took out and paid off the loan.
I just copied the template letter from this site (13 April), I received a letter back asking for a contact telephone number and a copy of some photo ID which I duly sent back and I received a letter from them last Wednesday notifying me of the refund.
It really is worth 20 minutes of your time and the cost of a second class stamp. It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey

Got refund for PPI on 2 HSBC loans from the 1990s.Due to my occupation I had more than adequate sickness/injury provisions and other life cover so would never have needed ppi on any loans.
I never even thought Id had ppi but thanks to the advice on this site,I wrote to HSBC anyway in April this year and got a pay out of £2,495 confirmed today.
However,HSBC make you go into a branch to prove your ID and address before they will pay you.You couldnt make it up really. They say its to comply with Money Laundering legislation (Yes,I nearly said you should be proving it to me dear, not me to you, cough, cough,Mexican drug cartels and shady money in Syria and Iraq (allegedly)...........The bank clerk also made a strange comment like'You should do the lottery'....like Id been lucky to have been deprived of MY money by their sharp practice all those years ago.
Needless to say,Im not in the HSBC anymore. So,if you dont know if you ever had PPI and was too shy to ask, just send that letter pronto asking if there are any references to ppi on any of your past loans?credit cards.Ive already alerted all my colleagues who were in the same boat as me.Martin Lewis,I salute you! Thanks for all your excellent work.0 -
Just a brief rumination...how come a bank employee could take a commission and deprive customers of money by foisting an unsuitable insurance on them and never get investigated under the Theft Act 1968?The definition of theft is dishonestly appropriate property from another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it.How their 'sharp practice' didnt amount to theft is something Id like to understand.Being made to return the money by the FSA still doesnt negate theft.Just wondering if some legal eagle had an answer.Maybe not best thread to ask this so ignore if not suitable.0

Thought I would share my experience with claiming ppi from the Halifax, started my claim in April got a letter and a phone call about 3 weeks later. The phone call was from one of their claim handlers asking quite stupid questions like was it a man or a woman who sold me the policy. This was for a loan I had taken out as extra borrowing on my mortgage in 2002 . They upheld my claim and I received a cheque for £1400 Great but this isn't the reason I am sharing this. On the original letter they also listed the ppi I had on the initial mortgage taken out in 1988 , now I didn't think I could claim that back as I had used that policy for a spell of unemployment lasting 2 years so I never thought anymore about it. Got another phone call asking if I wanted to claim that ppi back aswell. I told the handler that although I thought that it had been missold I had claimed on the policy so didn't think I could claim anything back , he took a few details and said I would here from them soon. The letter arrived today and they are paying back £1600 !!!!! So if you are not sure give it a go only cost me a stamp and I'm £3000 better off.0

Yes exactly this ^^^^ and if I hadn't written off to them they would still be holding on to my money (plus interest). The banks have put away millions for claims like ours so they know they have done wrong but aren't bothering to look into it so effectively have still got away with it.It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey
