PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

  • I claimed for mis-sold PPI on three bank loans in August 2012

    1 x Egg
    1 x M&S
    1 x Barclays

I did not have any of my loan agreements or documentation and all of the loans had been settled.

I received a refund of £17,500 from Egg in August 2012 on what was a £15,000 loan, I also received £2000 from M&S in September 2012 on what was a £5000 loan.

Barclays declined my application but on 24 April 2015 a payment of £9991 was deposited into my account, after further digging this was a PPI refund. I hadn't pursued this through the financial ombudsman after initial rejection and just totally forgot about it assuming I wasn't due a refund.

So in total I received almost £30,000
  • I was a bit sceptical about trying to reclaim some PPI but after reading various posts on this site I thought I would give it a try as there is absolutely nothing to lose.
So, in the first instance I called my Credit Card Company (HSBC) and requested a copy of my original agreement - I was told that the bank are only obliged to hold paperwork for 6 years so they did not have a copy as I took out the agreement in 1993! I then copied the letter from this website and sent it over to my bank to stake my claim. Within a week I had a reply with a full questionnaire for me to fill in and return. I really couldn't remember as far back as 1993 when I took out the credit card but as far as I could remember I was not made aware of the fact that I was agreeing to PPI - and I stated this on the questionnaire. I sent it off and was informed that I would hear back from the bank within 8 weeks.
7 weeks later I had a letter from the bank to confirm that they had cancelled the PPI on my credit card after receiving my letter to cancel. I immediately called them as I had NOT sent them a letter to cancel - I was told that a letter had been sent to me regarding my PPI claim so I said I would wait for that to arrive before taking that any further.
Next day a letter arrives - I was almost too scared to open it expecting the claim to be refused OR to be told there were more forms to fill in. Anyway, after staring at the envelope for about half an hour I decided to open it.
At first I thought there had been a typing error for the amount being refunded - I read it and reread it about ten times. But it was correct. I was being refunded a total of over £16,000!!!! YES - thats £16,000!!! I almost cried!! This means I can now pay off some outstanding debts that I have and also have a bit left over for a holiday - and this is all thanks to this website!

I would urge anyone who is thinking about making a claim to just do it! It doesn't take any time at all and you never know how much you might get back.

    Thanks Martin:::

I found the original agreements of 2 secured loans with the Halifax dated 2000 and 2003.
I was shocked to see PPI was included on both .....I thought I had taken out life insurance as they told me when I took out my original mortgage I had to have life insurance.

I wrote a letter with all the information I could think of and sent copies of the agreements to the Halifax.

2 weeks later I got sent their forms to fill in.

3 weeks after that I got a phone call from them....this lasted 55 minutes !!! The lady went over ALL the information I had written in the form .

Today after another 2 weeks I have received an offer of £5285 ....just waiting for the cheque now.

The loan taken out in 2000 was for £10,000....PPI was £18 per month..........I got £941.81 for this loan.

In 2003 I added to that loan another £10000 over 8 years ...the PPI was £30 per month ...I got £4335.70

A TOTAL OF £5,285.51 after they had taken approx. £500 tax off.

The reasons for mis-selling in my opinion were....

I was never told the PPI was optional

It was not explained to me at all and I had presumed it was life insurance.

The forms were posted to me to sign with the PPI already added for me to sign, although I took out the loan in a branch.

I had a good illness package from my employer ( 6 months full pay and 6 months half )

I had had time off from work with depression in 1995 which was on going.

So I say to you all HAVE A GO YOURSELF and I hope my post will give you confidence to do just that..

I would also like to thank Martin and his site and all those people who answered my queries.
  • Abbey Plc - now Santander

    Loan taken out in 1997

    PPI amount - £784

    Received back £1541

I had my copy of the agreement and in 2012 used MSE's template form to send my claim to the bank. They came back to me to say they had no record of me ever paying them (although the payments were made from my Abbey account).

I then wrote to the Financial Ombudsman. After a couple of years of them going back and forward to Santander we received the eagerly awaited letter to say we had been successful. Funds are now in our bank where they should be.

Just wanted to thank everyone at MSE for giving such great advice and I would recommend anybody to give it a go - what do you have to lose!

  • After successfully claiming £6,500 from Barclays for my husbands old loans I suddenly wondered if I had paid PPI on my old Lloyd's Tsb account.

I managed to find a old online printed bank statement with my account number so I picked up the phone and rang their claims line. I was informed that I had 2 loans which had PPI on them and claim forms were sent to me which I completed and returned. A phone call asking more information followed lasting about 15 minutes. The loans were from 1996.!! So I was a bit sketchy with finer details as I had no paperwork either.

Right on the deadline of the 8 weeks response time I received 2 cheques for £4,300. All for the cost of a phone call.

Thanks Martin and your team :T:T:T:T:money:

Another two complaints upheld from Egg/Canada Square Operations.

I had no documents, but managed to get the account reference numbers from a Barclays SAR - the loan amounts (from Prudential) could be seen going in, as could monthly payments out. Payments in and out had a common reference number. I guessed this to be the account number. I quoted it on the complaint form and included copies of the SAR pages showing the in going payments.

The loans were from 2000 and 2001. A cheque in excess of £5500 (minus tax) should be on the way shortly. (My previous upheld complaint to Egg was from 1999).

Thank you once again MSE. :)

    Hi
Success - I got a letter today from Alliance and Leics now Santander saying they are going to send me £3358 back for PPI on an old loan from about 10 years ago. I used Fastrack Reclaim so have to pay the slice to them but Im well pleased. Holding my breath now for 2 others notably with HSBC and one for my wife with Barclaycard .....

    Well what can I say.

Had two loans circa 1990. Sent the £10 of for a history of my bank details.

Came back with very little as not much on the system.

Thought I would claim anyway as one of the sheets did look like PPI had been front loaded. I had also defaulted on the loans. There were 2 of them.

Today i get a letter through from Lloyds saying they will soon either be sending me a cheque or a direct transfer into my bank of £3280. :-)

My advice, even if you hardly have any paperwork such as myself, give it a try :-)

Filled in the letter template on this site a year ago for NatWest, requesting that a check was done on my old student loan from 2001 and any subsequent loan consolidation that was done after that. Took ages and ages to hear back and finally heard back that there were five accounts over ten years being investigated (consolidated with a business loan and a couple of extensions, hence the number).

Turned out that the very first student loan had PPI added, which I did not know about, plus I believe was defunct anyway being a student and later self employed. Wasn't loads, but did get a very welcome payment of approximately £500.

    Thank you Martin and MSE!!
  • Righty ho! At long last I have my offer letter from the Yorkshire and Clydesdale Banks in front of me:

    - Refund of PPI Premiums and associated interest charges £34, 619.99
    - Total gross interest (pre tax) £6,477.07
    - Less basic rate tax £1,295.41
    - Net interest due (after tax deducted) £ 5,181.66
    - Total Redress £39,801.65

No money grabbing Claims Management Company taking 30% plus the attendant 20% VAT.
