PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

  • In Feb we began to look at reclaiming PPI.

I didn't know if I had ever paid PPI and for most of my accounts they were long closed and I had no paperwork.

I started by completing the generic PPI form from the FOS and sending it to a couple of companies that I had account numbers for. They came back saying I couldn't be traced- these were accounts closed more than 6 year ago.

I also sent a form to Canada Square - formerly Egg Loans. I had no account numbers for my former loans.

They wrote back asking me to supply evidence of my name and address. They have some strict requirements for what proof they accept- original bank statements or utility bills within 2 month, given everything is paperless, I had to arrange paper originals . Before I sent off the originals I was informed that I had PPI and that after the 20% tax on the interest, I was due £104!

I also received 2 further letters quoting 2 different account numbers asking for the ID.

I sent off the originals with the return acceptance form for the £104.

Within a couple of weeks I tecieved a cheque for £104.

A couple more weeks later I recieved 2 more letters for the other 2 egg loans. After the tax aspect I was due refunds of £1100 and £1700.

I have sent the acceptance off, just waiting on the cheques

I rang the Halifax PPI line and asked if I ever had PPI , they told me right away I did on an old credit card. I asked for the number of that account and completed the PPI complaint form.
About a month later a PPI claims handler from the Halifax rang me wanting to go over some of my answers.

About 3 weeks later I recieved an offer of £4700 after the tax deduction. The cheque arrived 3 days later.

My other half has also been successful in her AA credit card claim and was awarded £2200 after the tax deduction.

We have more accounts to apply against but the whole process has been so easy and either involved a phone call to check if PPI existed or a speculative claim form sent without any reference numbers.

The Halifax CC was closed in 2007! But they still paid out.

So far we are close to £10000 in reclaims.
  • A few years ago I made a claim on a Black Horse loan and my claim was dismissed.

Just after Christmas I received a letter from Black Horse telling me that as part of their audit processes my claim was being looked at. I refilled in the PPI paperwork etc.

I am happy to say that on Saturday I received a letter from Black Horse that my claim was now being upheld with an offer of £2700 compensation.

Whilst filling in my paperwork etc I read advice on this forum and a big thank you for your words of wisdom etc.

To anybody considering using a PPI company........don't it is so easy to do all this yourself.

Well received a cheque today from Argos for £673, so I would argue that it is another successful PPI claim resolved AND it was a second attempt, after initially being wrongly rejected in 2012, SO DON'T GIVE UP!!!. Before banking the cheque, I have seeked further advise elsewhere about my attached post and will post the outcome once I've had a reply.

Received a response from FOS today, who have agreed to look into Argos offsetting the funds, and asked me to provide copies of my DRO and the letter received by Argos!

Good luck with it though do note FOS call handlers are notorious for avoiding conflict and saying your claim is valid and wonderful whatever the merits.

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Thanks, however, I'm just seeing what the options are really. All correspondence with FOS has been through email. If I'm entitled to it fine, if not, fine as well. I'll just leave it at that and move on. I'm just posting my experiences on here as, if the information can help other people. After all, it is what these forums and the website are about.
  • Sent standard letter away on 1st March. Was told I would get a response by 28th April.

    Old EggCard now Barclaycard.

Received a letter today upholding my claim will receive £12,100

Waiting on a few other credit card companies to get back to me.

Thanks for all your help Money Saving Expert.
  • I recently applied for a ppi refund for my capital one credit card. It toot about 4 weeks for them to write back saying my claim was successful and I would be refunded £1350. In the letter they informed me that any arrears would be taken out of it (I have none) checked my online account today and have noticed they have added a "purchase adjustment" for £1340 and all my ppi has gone against this adjustment. Waiting to hear back from them to see what they say.
  • Hi,

Just a short note to say a big thank you to Martin Lewis and his team for providing such a great resource here.

For ages I've been meaning to check if I could reclaim PPI, if I had it. Well, following a nasty health issue just before Christmas, I knew I'd be off work for at least three months. I decided I might as well start the process while unable to do much of anything else.

I finally summoned up the energy and made a quick call to the Lloyds PPI line on 23rd February to see if I'd ever paid PPI. They confirmed I had, and asked what my concern was. I explained that due to pre-existing health issues I was concerned that no one had asked any health questions. They said they would send out a claim pack which arrived within a few days.

A couple of weeks later, before if worked out how to fill in the forms, I had a call from someone at Lloyds PPI dept. he went through a number of questions about loans, dates, and my concerns. He ended the call saying he believed he had all the information he required. I asked if I needed to complete the forms and he said no, only if I thought of any information that may need adding to the claim.

This week I received a letter from Lloyds and realised I'd forgotten to think about the claim (there has been a lot going on and I don't have a lot of energy at the moment). I opened the letter thinking it would be a rejection to find that they had found in my favour. There were a number of loans that I took out and for the three oldest loans I don't have any details and nor do they. They've used their average claim figure for these three loans.

They are going to send me a payment of almost £11,000!

This is a really useful sum, especially as I don't know how long it will take me to get back to working full time.

Thank you Martin and the rest of your fab team!!! :j

Got confirmation via post today that my ppi complaint against a Lloyds credit card has been upheld.

I initially raised a complaint against them in early 2012. They rejected my claim in the autumn and I appealed and was rejected again in March 2013.

I always meant to go to the Financial Ombudsman about this but missed the deadline so didn't think anything more of it.

I had heard in the news that some banks were reopening cases so I called Lloyds early last year to give them my new adress and contact phone number as I had since moved and changed my number. I am so glad I did as this January I got a call saying they had reopened my case and they asked me some questions.

Really happy today as they finally upheld my claim 3 years after initial contact about complaint. Advice to others is don't give up and make sure you contact any old banks/credit card providers with any new address or telephone numbers you have so they can contact you should they happen to reopen your case! :T

    Don't give up!!!!
