  • Thanks to this site I applied for SARS after being turned down by Barclaycard - account dated 1990 - 2005. I didn't have any paperwork showing I had paid PPI but when the paperwork was returned from SARS it contained the original application. Application must have been filled in in branch and was covered in annotations with a huge tick right through the tiny PPI section. I argued I would not have put a huge tick through a whole section and having the card for that length of time I must have owed a balance at some point so must have paid it. Delighted to say I received £2511.89 for my efforts, took three months from being turned down and cost me £10 for the SAR. Best £10 I've ever spent!

Moral of the story - DON'T give up at the first refusal
  • Thank you money saving expert! I used your template letter and got back £4,400 from First Direct for two old loans, and £456 back from Tesco credit card.
I cannot believe how easy it was. All for the cost of a few stamps.:j

Morning all, I made a complaint to the FOS about MBNA ppi back in January, I have received a letter this morning from the FOS saying "I am pleased to tell you that following our involvement MBNA will now be making you an offer of compensation on your payment protection complaint"

they go on to say that the offer follows the ombudsman general approach where we decide that a consumer shouldn't have been sold ppi.
It says that this can take up to 8 weeks for them to calculate what I have paid.

I am so happy with the decision and was wandering if anyone else had had the same sort of letter because all I can find are letters saying that they will make a good will gesture which isn't what I had.

I also have read a lot where MBNA will try any way they can to stall things so fingers crossed they wont take too long.

The FOS gives the firm a chance to pay up without incurring the FOS fee. This is what is happening here. With the FOS fee now quite high, it is often cheaper to settle than to argue the case. A comparison could be drawn with whiplash claims on motor insurance.

Thanks for your reply Dunstonh, does this mean that MBNA have to make me an offer within the 8 weeks timescale, as from what I have read they will try and do anything to stall.

I wouldn't be holding them to the date and the time if I were you.

After Barclays complaint upheld by the FOS ( eighteen months with them ) in September 2013 , I have been paid by BACS today.

Do not know why the delay but with the help of the FOS and my e mails it moved things along , the FOS e mailed and aoplogised for the delay and said Barclays will be sending a letter with details of the redress but I wont hold my breath there !!!

It is shocking the way customer services at Barclays have dealt with this case it seems that with the conflicting information they gave when they deigned to answer was a case of the blind leading the blind ( no offence to the visually impaired )

I'm happy you finally got your redress. I suppose it's important to realise that Banks don't have to work to any legal timescale to pay up when FOS rule against them.

To state they pay up begrudgingly is an understatement. I wonder if they pay the FOS fee so tardily?

I sent my claim forms off 8 days ago, not really expecting to get anything..
Got a letter this morning from Canada Square Operations to say I am going to receive almost £5000 for missold PPI on one of my old Egg Loans, and they are looking at another claim separately, as awaiting some further information from me.
Further to above post of 12th April, just received my cheque for the agreed amount today, so I am quite happy with the timely manner in which that has been dealt with.
The second one, which they are looking at separately, is descending into a farce however, with repeated vaguely worded requests for 'further information required', but no actual guidance as to what specific information. I've sent everything I can think they could possibly want, they've either lost it or don't accept it as evidence. Apparently they don't answer their emails or reply to correspondence.
