I am not sure if i am doing this correct but wanted to share my story.

I received a letter a month ago from First Direct regarding a small loan i had with them 8 years ago (i no longer bank with first direct) it was only running for a few months but they thought i had been miss sold PPI which was a nice surprise as i never gave it a thought, and have now banked a chq for £125,:T
It dose not stop there, on the 20th December i received a phone call advising that my ex husband had logged a complaint and as it was a joint loan they wanted to advise i will be getting another letter she could not advise the amount just thats its a substaintial amount!!!,(what ever that means) she also added i also had a loan in my name that ran for 9 months and that will be more than £900 :T
This got me thinking as this was a long time ago i used to have a barclaycard so i have rang them today and they advised i had PPI from 1997 to 1999 and another complaint logged. Think this maybe a good 2014 :)

  • What were you reclaiming: (eg. loan, credit card, store card)
    Loans
Who was the provider: (e.g. Capital One, NatWest)
    First Direct & Halifax
How much did you get back: ????
    FD - £10800
    Halifax - £5090
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman: ????
    Letter
And then write your brief reclaim tale

To be honest I was never going to make a claim, I knew I had PPI on the loans, but to be honest I had been on a DMP with the CCCS for 4 years, was nearing the end and just thought, ah well I have 1 year left, I havent paid interest I really can't be bothered.

One day a letter came in the post from First Direct stating I may have been missold PPI and I should fill out the attached form......I put the letter in a draw. Can't be bothered.

Then 3 months or so later i was on the phone with Halifax, and found out they hadnt cancelled my PPI when I started the DMP as requested by me and confirmed by them. I was mad, so I started a claims process, which they pretty much told me on the phone would be successful as they had screwed up my account, I just had to follow the paper trail, so i obliged.

In the process of filling out the halifax form, I remembered the First Direct letter, so thought what the hell, I fill this one out at the same time.

    Posted off the letters.

Now First Direct were really quick to reply and I was staggered by the amount offered 10.8k. This was enough to finish my CCCS DMP and have some left over, basically for the 1st time in 15 years I am debt free. Amazing.

Halifax (Who i hate with a passion as they seem to mess up a lot, I have taken them to the ombudsman about a credit card previously and won) dragged there heals. BIG TIME.

I also think they slightly jerked me about, at one point they posted me a letter saying i had to go into branch to update my address as it wasnt on record. Even though they just posted me the letter and statement. This took about 4 days to resolve, as after going into branch they told me there was nothing wrong with my account.

Anyway, just got word back on Xmas eve that they have upheld my case and will return £5k back to me.

To end this, claiming back the PPI was not hard work, takes a little amount of time and effort, and totally worth doing. I know the money isnt technically a treat, and essentially i have been paying for it over the past few years, but having now cleared my debts it has fully opened my world.
  • followed advice on MSE re reclaiming ppi.
initially just went for loans from Barclays.
I had two loans, one from 2003 and one from 2007, both only lasting about 12 months, I was self employed for both and had seperate accident, death and hospitalisation insurance. I got a total ppi refund of £3250. Barclays were extremely helpful and polite, and the repayment was straight into my bank account within a few days. Nothing but praise for how this was handled by Barclays.

next claim was for ppi on a Barclaycard, now this was TRICKY!!!
I had no record of Barclaycard number, as had thrown away most "unnecessary" paperwork when got married. Barclaycard denied I had had a card or PPI and wouldn't do anything.... Then, I found the Barclaycard PPI paperwork, (still not got anything else) and sent photocopy of that with form printed off MSE and again got a prompt and efficient repayment of £664

At same time as Barclaycard I applied for PPI repayment from Lloyds and Halifax. Both stalled, said I hadn't updated information, when I had. Just heard from Lloyds who now processing information..
Halifax... still no reply. I have had to phone and complain once... If necessary I will follow other advice on MSE re ombudsman.

The moral... It's worth trying... It's VERY worth trying.
  • I just wanted to say thank you very much, I used your guide and templates and so far I have received £6,400 back and I also got my husband £5000 plus we still have some claims being decided. I didn't even know if we had taken PPI I just thought I'd try for nothing.
I have sent the link to all my friends now for them to give it a go.:rotfl:

What year was this loan repaid?.
If you have valid reasons for mis sell and the loan number, contact the bank and make the claim.

Unless you have proof that the bank made you close the savings account to get the loan, you should not use this as a reason for mis sell, it is your word against theirs.
  • I reclaimed my PPI last year, surprisingly enough with help from my bank, Lloyds TSB! The same bank that more or less forced me to take PPI in order to get a loan and credit card!!!!!
In total there were 2 loans and 1 credit card to claim for. The bank assistant provided me with all details I needed, dates of both loans and when the credit card was taken out. He showed me where/how to access the form required on the Lloyds TSB home page.
I completed the forms online, 1 for each claim. (3 in total) This took approx. 10 minutes per form. Basically, when I applied for my loans and credit card I was told to apply for PPI or my applications would most likely fail because of my credit score at the time. If the applications did fail and I then re-applied for them including PPI, they would be automatically rejected. In essence, I was given no choice other than to apply for PPI.
I then had to print the forms off and post them, apparently, you can't send them electronically! I would recommend you use registered delivery so you know they have been received.
I was told the application would take around 13 weeks to complete. I asked if he could give any indication of how much I could expect to get back if I was successful. He looked at how much my loans were for, how long they'd been live and for my credit card when I initially applied for it, and balance over the period, his estimate was somewhere in the region of £4,000 - £5,000 although, he did say this was an estimate and he could not guarantee this amount.
The application did take slightly longer than the 13 weeks advised, but the claim was approved and I received in total for the 3 claims............ £13,278:00.
I had been putting this off for about a year and was thinking of using a claims handler who would have charged 30%, that would have been approximately £4,000.
IF YOU HAVE PPI ON ANYTHING, CLAIM IT BACK YOURSELF, DO NOT USE A CLAIMS HANDLER!!!!!! IT IS MUCH EASIER THAN YOU THINK!
A big thank you to Martin:j
  • What were you reclaiming:
    Loans
    Who was the provider:
    HSBC
How much did you get back:
    £5910
Did you get it back after a letter or did you go to the Financial Ombudsman:
    Letter

3 claims, mainly down to being a student and part time worker when obtaining the loans and feeling like I had to take the insurance in order to be accepted for the loan. Took a while, but HSBC didnt update my address so the original offer was made in August, but they only realised I had moved and sent the offer to my correct address a couple of weeks back. Money paid into account minus the tax and has been placed straight in my ISA to significantly help with my saving for a house deposit!!!
