PPI Reclaiming successes and failures

  • Hi everyone
I would really appreciate some advice. I took out a Barclaycard back in 1998 and think I completed the form that came with an unsolicited application form through the post. I do not recall ticking any boxes for protection insurance. As I havent used the card for a few years as I am desperately trying to pay off the card balance I have never noticed that I am paying for PPI. I noticed last month that the amount I am paying is around £50 per month - I have now cancelled the protection but would any of you recommend me to claim back the PPI that I have paid over the years. I was quite naive when I took the card out.

Any help or advice would be so appreciated especially as I am struggling (and now have 2 jobs).

    Thank you.

    Hi and welcome
If you have your reasons to make a reclaim on the PPI then give it a go.

All you do is complete the reclaiming questionnaire issued by the Financial ombudsman service (FOS), this replaced the template letter, send to the head office or complaints dept if they have one to the ones who set up the account.

Remember to keep copies in case you need to refer to it again at some point, they normally have 8 weeks to give a decision, but may ask for more time, but they should keep you informed of the progress of your complaint.

You will find the questionnaire on link below as stage one, good luck.

With some spare time I went through old credit card and store card records and wrote template letters. So far after 2 weeks have had 3 letters saying looking into it and one from HFC saying PPI was applied in 1989 and they are offering me a refund of the past 6 years PPI payments. I haven't used the account much in the past few years. Can they only go back 6 years or can I ask them to reconsider a longer period?
I also have a couple of loans, one NatWest and one Barclaycard which are ongoing and have PPI attached. Can I request that the PPI is cancelled without affecting the loan. Also I had previous loans with both these that were paid off but I do not have the paperwork. I was not aware that as self-employed with a pre-existing medical condition there was little point in taking this insurance. Can I ask them to look into those as well?

Hi there, DO NOT cancel the ppi on loans, wait to see if you win mis sell. If you cancel ppi now on loans, the loans will be reset without ppi and your term and apr will go up. Yes you can have all loans looked at that you have with them.

Thank you for that - it is really helpful. I will not cancel PPI on current loans. However, do you mean I should send in questionnaire for paid off loans to the 2 companies first and see what happens with those? I assume if they fail then just keep on paying PPI?

Hi there, if the loans are with the same company, you only need to do i letter with all account numbers on. So if you have 2 with barclays, do one letter and so on. You can claim for the loans still running at the same time.
