Because some small minded people fear what they don't understand and mock it as a defence mechanism to hide their own insecurities.Soleil_lune wrote: »So I don't understand why they think it's OK to mock them (and men like them.)
I don't understand the obsession with football, but I don't have a go at people that are enthusiastic about watching or playing it. It's their life, it's nothing to do with me and if it gives them pleasure then as far as I'm concerned I'm happy for them to enjoy it.Proud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230 -

It's always been the same! It seems to be OK for men to be obsessed with football and spend half their waking hours watching it or talking about it, or for men to spend half their waking hours fishing, or playing golf. But God forbid a man enjoys playing video games, or participating in science fiction and 'cult tv' events: he gets mocked and laughed at.
My OH and my brother have always been big on sci-fi and computer games, (although they don't participate regularly in any clubs with other people, they just go to conventions once or twice a year,) and they have always had blokes at work ribbing them and taking the pee. But it's OK somehow for THEM to be obsessed with football. One man even called my brother a freak for not liking football a few years ago. Why is my brother a freak for having bit of an obsession with Star Wars, but this bloke isn't a freak for having an obsession with Chelsea football club and all the players?
In my experience, adults are into video games, as much as - if not more - than children. No idea why people take the pee. It's simply a hobby. My husband and brother don't take the pee out of their mates who sit by the river for 10 hours on a Sunday hoping to catch one fish, nor do they take the pee out of people spending all their surplus income and most of their spare time watching football/going to matches. So I don't understand why they think it's OK to mock them (and men like them.)
Pretty narrow-minded people IMO.
Agreed I've no idea why some people think video games are solely for children, it's like saying books, films and TV shows are just for children, because some books, films and TV shows are aimed at children. It would be a pretty irresponsible adult who allowed a child to play an 18 rated game, like letting them watch an 18 rated movie.
Football is the most boring subject on earth to me and I hate how childish some of the fans can be. How they have the nerve to make fun of cosplayers, some of whom make absolutely incredible costumes and generally behave as adults should on public transport, is beyond me. I don't cosplay myself but love seeing everyone's efforts on DeviantArt. OH and I enjoy video games and sci - fi, and OH hates football and is rather attractive so he's perfect

I was made to feel the same way at primary school. As far as I recall, there was only me and a rather sickly lad from Poland, Tony Bukowski, who had absolutely no interest in it.
It was bliss to move on to secondary school where it wasn't played at all.0 -
Well exactly. It's just a hobby, no better or worse than many others. Some people like to fish, others like to play with model trains. Some like to paint Warhammer figures, and others like to dress up as Darth Vader, or Roman soldiers. Others like to zap aliens on their XBox. Some like to watch a bunch of men run around in a muddy field, and others like to watch cars or motorbikes drive round in circles. Each to their own, I say.Soleil_lune wrote: »In my experience, adults are into video games, as much as - if not more - than children. No idea why people take the pee. It's simply a hobby. That's a bit OTT! Why on earth should anyone fear someone who plays computer games??
I suppose as I'm not a fan I don't understand. How patronising is that? If I don't agree then it must be because I don't understand??
