    PROGRESS!
    1. No sound - no problem. Your computer will still be putting sound out the old way until you tell it otherwise. Goto control panel, then sound - hopefully you'll be able to see some output settings and can change it to HDMI. It'll currently be to a mini-jack, and it might indicate a certain colour.
    2. I think the resolution is out of your MONITOR's range, not TV. Get a picture on the TV whatever way you have. Shut down the computer. Disconnect the monitor from the computer. Turn the computer on. Hopefully you're still getting a picture on the TV. NOW try to put the resolution up to 1920x1080.
    3. Not exactly sure what this means, but I think it might be solved by only having 1 screen connected.

Summary - your picture problem is being complicated massively by having 2 screens. If your setup is going to involve just the TV, then lose the monitor now and most of your problems will go away.

    Conclusion (I hope)

I now have sound and vision on pc monitor AND TV screen.
I think that the pc picture was always there (on the tv), but it needed £45/'geek', to sort/find it.
I go into 'personalize > display controls' and swap monitor 1 to monitor 2 and tick 'send desktop to this monitor'. can then see and operate the desktop/pc from the tv monitor, with a wireless mouse/board.
I can now operate the pc in 2 different rooms, on 2 different monitors.
An interesting and frustrating learning curve and I should like to thank all you folks and especially you Almillar.
    Cheers

I was trying to take the 'monitor' out of the equation to avoid the 'screen 1, screen 2' frustration, to get us started, but glad you got it sorted!

'sorted' (sort of). there seems to be no consistancy between the 1 and 2 situation, what you see on each and how you control it. Possiby it is the 'delay' in things opening up...

    anyway - thanks
